That’s awesome!! I would give anything to hear him speak. He’s one of my favourite authors, and I haven’t even read all his books yet :).

When get over being a chicken, this quote is going to be my tattoo! 🙂

And he is a wonderful speaker – I met him briefly on his Ocean at the End of the Lane tour. I pretty much prattled on like an idiot, but it was worth the embarrassment 😛

Also, if you ever get a chance to see him around Halloween, he busts out his story “Click Clack the Rattle Bag.” It’s so spooky when he reads it aloud!!

I love listening to him read aloud. His voice is mesmerizing.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” –Fellowship of the Ring/Tolkien.

“Man is a suppressive being. Unless he learns when to stop, he will dive foolishly off the cliff, reaching for the star he has been chasing; the promise … the dream. Then as he tumbles down the mountain, he mercilessly crushes himself and those who believed in his attempt on the rocks of two cruel facts… that he is only human and that star was never in his reach.”

“I do not believe in the government of the lash, if any one of you ever expects to whip your children again, I want you to have a photograph taken of yourself when you are in the act, with your face red with vulgar anger, and the face of the little child, with eyes swimming in tears and the little chin dimpled with fear, like a piece of water struck by a sudden cold wind. Have the picture taken. If that little child should die, I cannot think of a sweeter way to spend an autumn afternoon than to go out to the cemetery, when the maples are clad in tender gold, and little scarlet runners are coming, like poems of regret, from the sad heart of the earth—and sit down upon the grave and look at that photograph, and think of the flesh now dust that you beat. I tell you it is wrong; it is no way to raise children! Make your home happy. Be honest with them. Divide fairly with them in everything.”
― Robert G. Ingersoll, The Liberty of Man, Woman and Child

“Be yourself, everyone else is taken” Oscar Wilde. It’s actually a quote I use a lot and simply puts things it perspective.
