I’m not sure about mindless books but I do have a great list of excellent novels that have threads of child welfare and foster care issues in them if you ever want that. For some reason everything I pick up recently has that topic and it’s not on purpose because I work in child welfare and was trying to find something mindless to distract me from it but then I end up sucked into stories that go there anyway
Me too, April. I just finished a 1200 page book that had nothing in the synopsis to suggest abuse, but that turned out to be an underlying theme anyway!
It was The Wheel of Fortune by Susan Howatch and it was amazing. It was slow going at first and I read several books in between but I kept going back to it. By the second half, I was completely engrossed in the story of this dysfunctional family. The perspective keeps changing from one character to another which helps you understand motivations and look at things a bit differently. I read the last 500 pages in a day and a half and I’m still hungover from the reading bender I’ve been on!
Not mindless in the least but “Ellen Foster”, by Kaye Gibbons, is a wonderful book about a little girl finding a home…it is short but it is significant. I read it when it first came out in the late 80’s, loved it so much that I gave it to friends as gifts, recently reread it and it is still a wonderful read!
I can’t think of any books I would call ‘mindless’ exactly, but if you want a funny light read Sophie Kinsella is always good. Undomestic Goddess is my favourite.
Pretty Little Liars
Good suggestion. Lianne moriarty might be just the thing they are looking for! Also Kate Morton writes entertaining mysteries if that is of interest.

Maeve Binchy’s books or Nancy Thayer’s. They are enjoyable easy reads.
Alexander McCall Smith’s books beginning with 44 Scotland street
Boat Girl by Melanie Neil. It’s a fun light weed and also touches on choices in child rearing from the child’s perspective as an adult
I like Elin Hilderbrand when I want a nice relaxing read.
Torey Hayden books ~ but only if you don’t mind reading about troubled children
Thanks all!
