I have a couple series that are like this because they’re all independent of one another with character mashups. But I have some series that I’d be a total train wreck if I tried to read out of order? Just depends on the series as a whole.
It depends on the series and how important it is to read them in order. But I really try to avoid reading out of order. If it’s not clear that the book is part of a series and what number then I look it up on Goodreads first.
I always try to read in order before starting. There was one where after I read book 1, the author was on book 13 and it was a series my family was reading and kept buying and passing to interested readers, there wasn’t a ton of character development/changes and I wasnt lost, so I kept up with new books as they came out as I caught up with 2-12
I did this with the Gibson Vaughn series by Matthew FitzSimmons, but it was because I accidentally skipped the third book unknowingly. So I went back and read it. Luckily it wasn’t hard to jump back because each book could be a stand alone although it does reference previous incidents.
I did this with the John Dies At The End series accidentally. I thought I was just missing something in the book i was reading, but it was super fun. the I learned it was a sequel ???? so I went back and read the first one and it was amazing and made some jokes/references in the second book make a LOT more sense XD
the dark hunters series by sherrilyn kenyon I believe can be 100% read in whatever order you want. I am! I dont have interest in every book, but it’s more a world she built with each book following different characters with some recurring characters or mentions to those from other books.
I’ve read some of the Mists of Avalon books out of order, and I’m glad I did. The first one I read was like the 4th or 5th book, really liked it. Went back to the beginning and book one was good, book two I haven’t finished yet, not really enjoying it.
One series I’ve read, Redwall, they’re written out of chronological order, but doesn’t make it confusing. I used to think I’d try to reread them in chronological order, but haven’t figured out that order yet
When reading books in order, I hate that the author reiterates what happened in the previous book, but I guess they do that to help out readers who jump into the middle..
I do it when those are the audiobooks available on my free library service. It depends on the author as to how much I can follow.

I’ve never tried. I refuse to read series out of order.
