I do. I only choose not to read it if there are an abundance of reviews bashing how a woman is portrayed. Like if it is a heroine who is super whiny. It’s rare for me to choose not to read something based on bad reviews but I will often read something because I see a bunch of rave reviews over it.

I always read bad reviews first, for me I find they talk more about characters and the story a bit more honestly, I always end up reading the book regardless but it helps me get a good sense of the book first

Thanks for your thoughts!! I’ve been writing book reviews and I wasn’t sure if it even gets read ? Maybe my reviews aren’t enticing enough?

Just keep writing. Sometimes it takes a while to find a clear voice. Also, I rarely will comment or react to someone else’s review but it doesn’t mean I didn’t read it.

@April good to know!! Thanks!

No problem! If you enjoy writing reviews just keep doing it. I think it helps me process my own reaction to a book when I write a review just as much as it may help someone else. Do it for yourself and not for others. The rest will follow.

@April great tip!! Yeah I do seem to process each book differently. Some have longer reviews than others depending on how much I enjoyed the book ?

Trust me, authors read each and every review.

@Deanna they can’t be the only ones tho? Maybe i should be more consistent with my actual reviews. I’m so behind ??‍♀️

I read reviews sometimes and actually enjoy the books that have a lot of negative reviews. Too many people complain about poc or whiny characters or love interests and I just don’t care about all that. I enjoy a book no matter what and hardly ever DNF it.

I read reviews which sometimes changes my mind on getting the book, but also it’s good to get other opinions about it 🙂

usually if im getting into a long series, or a book that’s like fanlltasynand has magic and all that good stuff, i tend to read reviews to see if the heroine is worth it, if the world building is good, etcetc! I don’t want to start a book only to get disappointed halfway through, or be confused bc the worldbuilding is terrible and the explanations are just word vomit, etc. I have high standards for fantasy books, basically ? but for romance books, i have really low standards. i love cheesy romance books a lot! they’re such a sweet and easy read and a good palate cleanser after i read a heavy fantasy book lol

Not really. I like to have my own impression first and compare that with other opinions.

I read the reviews before I buy. Sometimes I check them out again before I read the book. If there is a bunch of less than three star reviews in a row then I usually will skip it. I don’t mind bad reviews but there are a bunch in a row then that raises red flags. Sometimes the bad reviews backfire and make me want to read it even more. Like the ones that complain about sex or cursing.
