I’m not a great mystery fan, but I’m on my second Barbara Vine novel and enjoying it. (Reading The Minotaur, read A Dark Adapted Eye a while back.) Seems I also liked a Ruth Rendell–Vine’s a nom de plume–quite a few years ago. More psychological than whodunit.
Robert Barnard (classic mysteries), Simon Brett (classic and comedic mysteries), Andrew Taylor (classic mysteries), Peter Guttridge (satirical mysteries)
Anne Perry..the William Monk and the Thomas Pitt series. They’re set in Victorisn England..but you will really like the cases they have to solve and you’ll LOVE Hester (Monk’s wife, a nurse, who worked with hom)..and Charlotte..(Pitt’s wife..who did the same).
Much depends on what you like in a mystery. Do you like cozy or police procedural? For the classics, I love Dorothy L. Sayer. Anne Perry is also always solid. Her “Resurrection Row” is one of my favorite books. Peter May’s “The Blackhouse” is good, but he’s a Scot. Elly Griffith’s Ruth Galloway series is okay. M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin series goes light and would be considered a cozy, but is sort of mean-spirited.
Check out Robert Galbraith, JK Rowling pseudonym. They are brilliantly written. 4 so far in series.
Ann Cleeves
Paul Doherty
S.J Bolton. , Sacrifice was her first. It was delicious.
