When you have a lot going on in your life, it can be hard to read. It’s okay to take a break. Or, you can read short stories for a while.

All the time. Sometimes reading helps, sometimes it doesnt. I’m changing my goal for 2019 to help with the stress of it all ?

I did about a week ago. I was feeling down, miserable, just crappy. I called my dr, had my meds increased and I’m feeling much better.

Reading was always my check out from stress.

I think reading IS a check out from stress as @Michaela says. However I also think it can be the case that mental health issues cause such a lack of concentration that trying to read becomes stressful or even impossible. If that becomes the case why not switch to Audible for a while ? That way you get to escape to the world of the book without having to read.

I run into this sometimes. I will often read a book for review (for something I got approved from off NetGalley or something I won from good reads) to take away my control of choice and break it up.

Whist goal setting is a fun challenge that too can cause stress if you are not in a good place

@Sally i chose younger nonfiction books that covered things i didnt know to alleviate stress of goals. But im finding my reading limit to be 10 pages at a time

@Rikki I understand. Maybe try light fiction on audio books, or a re read of a much loved book on audio.

Yes! I had a super tiny goal of 15 this year and I didn’t even reach that.

I feel like it’s too much effort to try and concentrate on a book most of the time (so instead I spend the time laying in bed)

I’m hoping to be better next year but you know mental health, you can never predict it!

And I know people suggest audio books instead but sometimes that’s even more effort to try and listen to a book because you have to concentrate even harder on what is being said and it’s easier to zone out and then next thing you know it’s three chapters ahead

Thats my struggle with audio books. Im a very visual learner, so audio is next to impossible

@Rikki I’m very similar, I prefer reading the words on the page and I also like holding the book, it grounds me and keeps me more focused on reading if I’m actually holding it

It’s the opposite for me. I was struggling with mental health issues for most of this month and all I wanted was to be left alone with my books. However, I do find that I can’t listen to my audio books when I’m having a hard time. I can’t focus on the story and have to switch to music just so I can check out for awhile during my commute. I hope things are getting better for you. ?
