Actually yes but happy about it. I have to read everyday. People equally busy to me say, “I haven’t had time to read in so long.” Well, I don’t get that. I literally always make time. In the busiest, most stressful season of life–even when I had four jobs–I always read. I could probably get more work or chores around the house done if I wasn’t like “well, I need to go to bed so I can read, I’ll do this later.” But in 20 years, I am not going to fondly remember pushing myself to the brink in work…but I WILL fondly remember my book adventures! ☺️

I have found that Audible is the answer! Can accomplish so many mundane tasks around the house and yard while enjoying a good book at the same time! If the reader is talented it often makes the book even better. May I recommend the Outlander series. You will forget that it is one person reading and become totally immersed . Read by Devina Porter I believe. Also…..A Gentleman From Moscow. Have heard from many that they have a hard time “getting in” to the book. The audio version is a gem!! Beautifully read brings the main character to life.

Tammie

Just as social media is perceived as the bane of relationships, reading was predicted to be the downfall of productivity. “He who first shortened the labor of copyists by device of movable types was disbanding hired armies, and cashiering most kings and senates, and creating a whole new democratic world: he had invented the art of printing.:
(Thomas Carlyle, Sartor Resartus, 1833) And as most predictions go…it will be what each individual allows.

Reading in place of relating to live persons in family and friends is “too much.” Reading in lieu of other real responsibilities is “too much.” Anything can be an addiction.

Actually, if you look at my house and my lack of time spent housekeeping, I probably DO read too much ?

Recently, dishes and other tasks take the backburner to reading. Which is fine sometimes, but…. I am thinking “reading time” might have to be the dangling carrot I use as a reward to myself when I have finished at least BASIC house-keeping/life task duties. 🙂

1
Carolyn

@Goldfinch , it’s what I do on weekends. I have a huge list of to dos and when they are “to done” I don’t feel guilty spending the rest of the day reading.

If I didn’t read as much as I do, I’d have to spend a fortune going out to movies, plays (or operas), and concerts, because I don’t have any TV here. It sounds odd to say it when I read for entertainment, but I lack the patience necessary to enjoy television.

1
Reply
Florence

There is nothing worth watching any way.

0
Kevin

Florence Dube Lockhart I wouldn’t necessarily say that. I do miss some things, like Turner Classic Movies; the local university channel with its broadcasts of concerts, lectures, and its art house films on Saturdays; the free rebroadcasts of operas from the Met (which used to save me the cost of $26 to see it screened live); etc. But television series annoyed me because I DID think there were some things worth watching, but I didn’t necessarily want to watch them every week. Thus, I started recording programs on the DVR, and had to set up such a clip to catch up with the backlog that I was far more annoyed by that than having to watch them weekly. Given that I wasn’t interested in seeing things once a week, having to see three episodes at a time before the next program aired just made it that much worse. That’s why I say I don’t have the patience for television. So after several months of filling up the DVR with things I was going to watch “later”, I canceled the subscription and returned the box to the cable company.

1
Denise

I rarely watch TV these days.
