I was introduced to John Keats through a Science fiction series called Hyperion. In the second book, Fall of Hyperion, the characters quote and talk about John Keats with a kind of divine reverence.
After reading, I went out and got a collection of his poems. Turns out I wasn’t as interested in poetry without the fiction narrative backing it up ?
@Rohen the first book, Hyperion is like Canterbury Tales in space. I loved it. The second book, Fall of Hyperion, is one of my all time favorite scifi books.
Yes, I enjoy reading poetry, Whitman is the poet who I first read,oh, let me see, Bukowski, Robert M. Drake, man I’ am suffering from brain freezehere, but poetry does exite me.
? What’s life without poetry? Keats, Yeats, Eliot (core of my love for verse), Marvell, Byron, Longfellow, Donne, Chaucer, Brontë, Dickinson, Wordsworth, The Bard…oh the list is endless!
Robert Burns A Man’s a Man For All That. He wrote in Scottish Lallans (Lowland) accent. Whilst it’s English it sometimes needs explanation as in this example. I live in Northern Ireland and this is the accent I grew up with, as is often said ‘It’s the language of my heart’ http://www.interlinear.info/mansaman.htm
“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”
My husband has had some of his poems published when he has entered competitions and has also had some put into a book of poems and published himself xx
Although I read poetry only rarely of late….I just discovered Mahmoud Darwish. I’m reading The Adam of Two Edens….his poems are insightful and for me…unique in their perspective…..I am enjoying them very much….
