I thought the books were amazing and reread them many times but I did NOT at any time think any of them were scary. However, I wouldn’t let a young child read them either. I would keep them aside for when the child was at least 11 so we could read them together and discuss.
No. Parts MIGHT be scary to little kids, but they’ve never bothered my daughter and she has been watching the movies since she was tiny. As for the books, the storyline and language is really to complex for young readers. I’ve tried to read them to my daughter and she really struggled to keep up and comprehend so she wasn’t frightened by the books either.
Exactly. My young sister couldn’t sleep after reading them and I thought that was funny!! I believe it’s a great series too; I read it over three times!
My 10 year old is a little bit squeamish so I have to skip over some parts of the books when I read them out loud to her. But she is extremely sensitive….. she does enjoy the story line though.
What’s with the angry reactions!? I’m allowed to have opinions aren’t I? I don’t particularly enjoy books that have magical plots to them, I find them boring.
My boys read them once they could read. Then watched them once the movies came out. My youngest two watched them when they were 6 or 7 and none of them were afraid.
I think it depends on the reader? I have a series of 6 that are a similar type of thing and was very surprised to see an adult review mentioning the first book was scary! Personally I don’t, they got darker as the kids grew older which you would expect.
I started to read them when I was in about 2nd or 3rd grade (around 2002-2003), and I was never scared of them. I’d already been terrified of horror films and haunted houses before then, so I knew fear, but Harry Potter never invoked that same feeling in me, no matter the time of day I read the books

It’s definitely one of those things where we have to consider where each child (or adult ?) is. I loved the books but cried for DAYS when Dobbie died.
No and I’m the biggest chicken around
I’d say not. There are dark parts but overall they’re not scary books. They’re aimed at 8+
Not at all! Just finished reading them with 9 year old boy and he didn’t find them scary at all
No not at all.

They do get darker with each book, no doubt. The soul sucking is weird

I thought the last couple were darker, but I don’t know if I’d call them scary.

No, but I read them as an adult. A young person might have a different opinion

Towards the end they get dark
If you find death scary then I think it is “scary”.
