My husband rarely reads fiction but will happily become immersed in a 700+ page computer textbook. I suppose he reads all day at work and likes a break after that. My son loves to read but is at a difficult age to find books for – too young for a lot of YA and has outgrown some of the series he has happily read until now. We are filling the gap with graphic novels whilst waiting to find the right fit for him.

He should check out E. Nesbit’s books! They’re excellent for that age, and there’s a bunch of them??

Because we need an escape.

My hubby of 46 years reads just as voraciously as I do, mostly fiction, we often read the same book/series at the same time so we can discuss it as we go along!

Nope. I think it’s about even.
Maybe more females read the romance genre than males? And that IS the highest selling genre—but I think it’s because romance readers consume their books at a faster rate. Maybe if we compared Men’s magazines to romance novels, it would still come out even??

My husband reads. He’s almost always reading a book.

Because people get annoyed if you say ‘hold my beer’ and read a book.

More seriously, I think it’s a combination of current social norms and failings in education.
We’ve come a long way since it was believed that women shouldn’t want to read but now we’ve gone too far in the other direction, and many teachers in public schools make the mistake of assuming that boy students are more difficult, and the students rise to the expectation which often results in lower grades and less interest in reading.

I don’t think they do. What I do think is that women participate in groups (both online and in person) about reading more than men so it seems that way. Every man I know reads, reads a lot, and select their own books without looking for recommendations from others.

My partner used to read fiction but barely even looks at it any more. But he spends hours immersed in political, historical, and other articles online. My 3 brothers & my dad have never read a book, except the ones they had to at school & they often skipped those! But they all have SENs.

My husband is also a reader but he isn’t a book collector like I am. He always has a book going though.

Yes definitely, or at least that’s the case around me. Why? IDK maybe because most novels are fiction and romance and this fits the girls more.

I loathe romance.

Most girls not all. Me myself don’t like the insta love, pure romance stories.

Honestly I think that most books are geared towards women. Most men can’t find anything to read that might interest them.

Most books published are now geared toward women, but I think that’s more following demand. When I was a kid there was a larger selection of Westerns for sale, and when I read older books they mention a lot of adventure novels that used to be in market, but these spaces have been overrun with bodice ripper romances and Patterson.

Yes! My boyfriend is not a reader and he says that its because he can’t find any good books that were written for men. He doesn’t like romance novels at all. But I found a few fight card books and he loved them. Lol I like when he reads because if he is reading them I can read.

Tammy

@Annie My dad’s similar. There was so little available that was really good. It reached a point where he was reading nothing but non-fiction and political thrillers, and then he mostly fell off reading.
He still gets excited when I mention Lonesome Dove or Zane Grey, though. I think I’ll do some research and get him a good western for Father’s Day. (Thanks! Your comment saved me! lol)

Your welcome @Tammy I am happy to help.

The men I know read science fiction, especially space operas and hard science fiction. Or the murder mysteries written especially for men, like Mike Hammer, Mickey Spillane, et al.

@Tammy Buy Longmire. I watched the Netflix series based on the book and it was excellent, so the book is probably even better. It’s a western mystery about the sheriff of a small county in Wyoming.

@Harriet We’re from Wyoming, Craig Johnson stops by our B&N every couple of months. =)
I gave Dad the books, but I’m not sure he’s picked them up. He’d already kind of turned off books by the time I picked them up, It’s really a pity because he likes the Longmire television show almost as much as I do. (He actually recommended I start watching it when it was still on the television network that tried to kill it.)

If guys can’t find something to read, they are not looking.

Maybe because women are more at home in imaginary worlds and situations, we (genetically or traditionally) develop our ability to fantasize easier (in general).
