It doesn’t matter. Many times i watch the movie and then i want to read the book but sometimes i will read the book before the movie. i am visually motivated so i would probably pick the movie first.
I am a fan of reading after. Movies are never as good as the book (obvi, I know) so I like being able to enjoy the movie on its own and then read the book. However, most times I have read the book first.
Weirdly enough, after. If I read it before, all I do is make comparisons while watching the movie and it prevents me from actually enjoying the movie as its own entity.
I usually do decide to read the book first, but think there are benefits to going the other way. I saw Gone with the Wind before I read it, and I think that was the better scenario. Partly because when I watched the movie, I didn’t know all the stuff they cut out from the novel, so I couldn’t be hard on it as an adaptation and could just enjoy the story. But also, having Clark Gable’s Rhett Butler and Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara firmly in my mind to visualize as I read the novel was amazing.
Isn’t it funny when you read a Big you picture the character. Then when the movie comes out the character isn’t what you had visualized. Like Jack Reacher in the Book and Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in the movie. ?
I am happy doing both..books are generally cheaper than seeing the film at the cinema. Also seeing the film whets my appetite for more. On the other hand I sometimes get really frustrated if I read the book first and my favourite bit is dumbed down in the movie. ?
It depends.. sometimes I find the book just thanks to the movie, for example, Divergent.. loved the movie so much that I had to read the book for more details.
Either way. Sometimes I read the book afterwards to to get more information on what happened. Movies by their nature are different but are good unless they change too much. I once watched a Lisa Minelli movie The Sterile Cuckoo from the book by John Nichols. The changed her character from a free spirit and the man in the book was the centre and left her. In the book, she dumped him The same with Breakfast At Tiffanys. In the movie, they changed the ending so that she stayed with the man whereas in the book she wandered off to Brazil and had a great life. No wonder Truman Capote did not like the movie, although Audrey Hepburn and Patricia Neal were great.
There is a movie I watched I need to look up there has to be a book to this. Such w important part of history that should be taught in schools and it’s not. I had no idea a woman did the behind real work on the space stuff at all.. Man I can’t think of this movie title now let me look it up ugh
No hidden figures I knew nothing about until I saw the movie it it’s my next buy. I was in shock watching this movie and I would like to know why this was not taught in schools.. And I wonder if it is now if not I would love to see a history teacher or lit teacher have it as a taught lesson plan. Definitely some history that is needed to be known
I’m always the nerd that watches the movie first and finds out it’s a book! Than I get the book and wonder why they didn’t make the movie a 17 hour flick to make sure they truly stuck to the story line.
I remember the last sentence in Crazy Heart: “God damn, Otis” Read it—a very good story well told. Junk the movie, but maybe do both and compare the two.
I think it depends on the book. I just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and it was difficult to read only because of the fact that I know I was mispronouncing names of people and places which drove me crazy the entire book.
Definitely before!

Gotta read it first… unless I watch a film and later discover it was based on a book… in which case, well, film first.
Before
But I have read them after.

Indifferent. I read The Fault in Our Stars after seeing the movie and loved the book more.
I couldn’t get into the movie or the book. It was a little too hyped up for me and everyone around me spoiled the ending. :/ I still cried though haha
@Hailey: I knew the entire story beforehand, and was in the middle of the movie and I was like wait, this is.a book. Read it a year later.
Before, but hate how popular a book becomes when a movie is announced. I guess I add to that though. ?

I prefer reading the book first. I’d rather be disappointed by a movie than a book.
Definitely before. I will then watch and trash-talk the movie, because most of the time, they end up butchering the story. ???
Reading only. Rarely follow up with a film.

I always rush to read the book before I see the movie if it’s a genre or story I think will be interesting
I’m always the nerd that watches the movie first and finds out it’s a book! Than I get the book and wonder why they didn’t make the movie a 17 hour flick to make sure they truly stuck to the story line.
After. That way I can enjoy the movie and the book separately without being disappointed.

I recall two movies taken from books: True Grit and Crazy Heart, both far better read than looked at/
I remember the last sentence in Crazy Heart: “God damn, Otis” Read it—a very good story well told. Junk the movie, but maybe do both and compare the two.
