Do you log every book you read?

Question: Do you log every book you read? I love reading horror and true crime books, but sometimes those can get heavy. So I will break things up with my guilty pleasure of romance. However, I never log any of those books.

Recently I start list the books I read. Then I also add the books by same author. Now I feels its a good thing since it helps me to decide what to read next.

I never really logged until I realized I read so much I wouldn’t remember new books I was interested in. I also started as a way to encourage my kids to read since then it helps keep them going it we are all trying to react a goal.

I log everything I read. Books I read to/with my kids, poetry collections, comics and mangas, audiobooks, every novel. The good ones, the bad ones, the “guilty pleasure” ones. 😛

I’m terrible at logging books I read. I got a little better once I joined Goodreads however I still end up checking out books from the library that I previously read.

Yes, I log everything. Even the kids books and YA I read for breaks from heavier stuff.

I read lots of YA stuff too. Got any recommendations? I usually read it with my daughter since we have a hard time find books for her. She’s reading and comprehension is at college levels but she’s only 14, and some YA stuff is not middle school content

S. A. King is great

I just read In A Mirror by Mary Stolrz recommonded on Gretchen Rubin’s Top 83 YA & Childrens books. It was published 1953! Amazing writer. . . Maybe one of my very favorite books ever!
Maybe not for your daughter right now but I would highly recommend it.

50 Shades?

0
EvonneQuestion author

@Tami I was not really impressed with that series. I read them cause everyone was so in love with the series, but it wasn’t really my favorite. I read them once and was done.

0
EvonneQuestion author

Tami Boyer Ali that is just me. I say read a sample if you like it go for it. That’s how I usually decide to read a book I’m not sure about. It wasn’t the content of the books so much as the characters and the writing style for me.

1
Jennie

I haven’t read the 50 Shades series either. I tried a sample of the first one and couldn’t get into it.

2
Louise

Think that’s very sad – why be ashamed of what you read? who has taught you to feel that way?

0
Roxane

I wish I had kept a list of every book I read since I started reading “grown-up” books–starting with Hound of the Baskervilles in fourth grade.

I too wish I would have logged every book I’ve ever read. Some I remember, but others I don’t

2
April

I’m considering keeping a book log of every book for my future children, then giving it to them when they get older. That way they can look back on what they’ve read like I wish I could do.

3
Roxane

@April Now why didn’t I have that idea 38 years ago???

1
Roxane

And that would have been in 1958 or 9. The list would be long.

Curious why people edit what they log? If you read it who cares what others think about your list. Or is there another reason?

EvonneQuestion author

I never really logged just because they aren’t books I rate or anything. Just a filler to get me out of the mindset I’m in for most of the other books I read

1
Jean

@Evonne thx. I’m new to tracking what I read. Just started last year

1
Alexandra

I keep track of what I read, but don’t “post” it all. I read self-help, financial, career change, and other types of books for myself, and others to research/cope with family medical issues. I don’t feel like it’s necessarily appropriate, or necessary @ all, to broadcast those. It’s not embarrassment; I just keep my personal life personal (especially if what I could put out might involve someone else; it’s not my place to publicize a family member’s issues just because I need to inform myself about how to care for him/her). It’s not a big deal-not everyone is into, comfortable with, &/or feels the need to be sharing all just bc social media exists. Just my personal opinion!

Ohh I will have to look at that one. I was really into true crime for a while until I read one that involved children. Gave me nightmares for a week and made me want to keep my kids locked up in the house. Now I make sure to break up my reading with different genres

0

Never. I trust that if they were important, I’ll remember them and why; if only for a few days’ entertainment, no need to recall.

I’ve logged every book since I joined Goodreads in 2010, but now I’m embarrassed by some of the things I read back (uhm, 50 shades…) in the day.

I almost want to start a new Goodreads account, but I think it’s good to see how my tastes change as I get older.

I log everything on Goodreads. All books. I only started in 2010 but I am trying to go back in time and log all the books I’ve read- if I can remember them. Wish I’d kept a book log like Pamela Paul. Her book inspired me to try.

Is it in good reads that everybody is logging? Does anyone just keep a simple written list? I have trouble with series that I start and then lose track while waiting on the next book ( usually this only happens with the more mediocre series I’ve read). Keeping lists or ” logging ” would help with this I imagine.

Check out FictFact. They keep track of series, all authors, all genres, and let you know the next in the series when you mark what you’ve read. I’ve even found some books and series I didn’t know existed. I just spent some time on there catching up what I’ve read and ordering a bunch of “next” books from the library and putting others on my Amazon wishlist. Best site for this I’ve seen.

I have used Goodreads for years and cannot live without it!

On good reads do you mean? yes, of course. Why on earth should I Care what anyone on there thinks of my taste in books? You can’t be serious surely? And how is horror better than romance? I think that is very sexist, given that it is mostly women who read romance, why disparage a genre read manly by women?

1
Reply
Melissa

I agree!

0
EvonneQuestion author

You know I’ve really been into romance, or at least not where it was the main theme of the book, but that’s just me. I’ve mainly never logged the books because so many of them contain multiple books or are so short, I feel like I’m cheating by reading a short book. The other reason I may not log every trashy romance- cause those lighten up the heavy ready I do for pleasure and with school- is because my teenage daughter is also on my goodreads. Maybe in a few years when she can appreciate a romance novel I may add them.

0
Julissa

I think a person’s preferences are personal. I love horror but hate romance. That’s just MY preference. It doesn’t mean I’m sexist or feel it’s an inferior genre or look down upon someone who enjoys it. Everyone enjoys different things and that’s what keeps things interesting. ?

0
Melissa

Yeah I don’t care who sees what I read. Do people actually care about that? I’ve read some raunchy, low rated stuff and it’s still on my goodreads log for the world to see.

2
Reply
Katherine

I do. I find it interesting to look back at the types of books I have read. I an kind of an eclectic reader. The only books I struggle with are crime.

1
Reply
CarolAnne

I generally omit logging the trashy romances, they tend to be ‘fillers’ in between heavy or serious books for me, a bit of light relief where you know there will be a happy ever after ending.

I don’t log mangas, which are still considered “books” on goodreads, I just can’t see them as books. Last year though; I cheated and logged 20 volumes of Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack of Titans) ’cause it did feel like reading a book with pictures.

Log them, they still are books. Many Book Reviewers say they read 200+ books a year, and they have counted everyone of the short “brain candy” books. ?
