I was fortunate, when I read that she signed her book if it was purchased at her local bookstore. I purchased several copies asked them to be personalized for family and friends. Not too long afterwards she stopped signing when she found out people were selling them on eBay.
City on The Edge of Forever, autographed by Harlan Ellison, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, autographed by Neil Gaiman, and a surprise autographed copy of Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club. I picked up the Joy Luck Club at a Half Price Book store – it was even personalized! (How could anyone let that go?!)
The haunted lighthouse. By RL Stine. Dorothy of Oz. And. The Lion of Oz and the Badge of Courage. Roger Baum. I have a few other signed books but these are my favorites
I have several books in the Outlander series autographed by the author, but I have one paperback in the series that’s signed by almost all of the cast, the producers, AND the author. That one is VERY special to me.
He does the best signings! He wrote “with love” on a book for my mom but he made the w look like a butt with pimples ?. On my book he wrote “Emily, it was so nice to finally meet you!”
@Atul’s Being Mortal. I went to a book signing at the Strand bookstore on the day it was released. I don’t read much non- fiction but that book is so important. I also loved The Checklist Manifesto- I highly recommend!!
Patty Duke’s Call Me Anna, personalized to me (and she signed it as “Sean and Mac’s mom” because she didn’t think a 13 year old knew who she was. In fact, I was a huge fan! This was 30 years ago
When Neil Gaiman’s Trigger Warning was release he sent a bunch of autographed copies out to independent bookstores. Snowbound Books in Marquette, MI got a few copies and my husband surprised me with one. What a guy ♥️!
Neil Gaiman signed “Blueberry Girl” for my daughter. I have her teachers write something in it for her every year. I will give it to her when she graduates high school.
Awe. We have a copy of Dr. Seuss’ Oh The Places You Will Go. We have her teacher sign it each year. She starts middle school next year, so it will be a little more work. I think by H.S. we will just pick a few of her favorite teachers and maybe the principal.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (1st edition and signed), The Help by Kathryn Stockett (signed), East of Eden by John Steinbeck (1st edition and signed)
Certainly Bonfire of the Vanities, by Tom Wolfe is one. But probably I’d say The Daughters of Mars, by Thomas Keneally, who as we talked while he signed, added an asterisk with “who’s actually read the book.” I had, and it made me laugh!
Landline by Rainbow Rowell, Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie, The Death Cure by James Dashner, and Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris.
:’River of Grass’ signed by Marjorie Stoneman Douglas. I bought it in Florida in the 70’s. Also a Peterson field guide signed by Roger Tory Peterson, who I met not long before he died.
Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein’s All but My Life, and Enola Gay by Colonel Paul Tibbits, both signed at history conferences following their presentations.
If you are in the DC area you can see her work in the National Museum of Art. My daughter & I got to see how her work progressed from the initial sketch to the finished piece.
Christopher Moore, got it on my birthday along with a birthday hug. I also bought an autographed 1st edition copy of Wicked, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West at a Half Price books for 99 cents. Lol. They didn’t think it would sell. I just like witches, so I picked it up. Love the series, seen the play X3.
Sadly, most of the book stores are closing down. I love to browse them, but that will be a thing of the past soon. I stopped buying books, as I was becoming quite the hoarder. I only buy my favorite authors now. Christopher Moore, Toni Morrison, Gregory MacGuire and a few others I knew I would read more than once.
Lots since I’m a librarian and attend lots of conferences but The Prince of Tides signed by Pat Conroy is special. We also chatted and when he shook my hand when we parted I refused to let my husband hold my hand. ?? He said that was your I met the Beatles moment. No – it was better!
I have Outlander by Diana Gabaldon–which was a total prize because it is a paperback in pristine condition that I found at a used bookstore! I also have some Jan Brett books my daughters and I got at an author meet and greet.
Have a signed copy of The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood from a lecture of hers I attended. I also have a signed copy of Neil Gaiman’s short story collection Trigger Warning, that I snagged a bookstore that was sent a certain number of signed copies.
Thanks to the University of Northern Iowa’s annual Reading Conference: Jose Aruego, Tomie dePaola, Marc Brown, Jean Craighead George, Mem Fox, Steven Kellogg. Does anyone remember these wonderful children’s book authors?
I surprised my Mom and took her to a book signing with Ginger Rodgers whom she loved. I now have the book after my Mom passed. I also have an autographed copy of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian .
Yes!!! I have one too. Met him in Jan 2017 at the Bookmark, Neptune Beach FL. Wonderful talk! He gave me a t-shirt for being the only Armenian the crowd.
@Sophia absolutely!! I sent him a message the day before I saw him- he always responds which I love. He actually recognized me called mt by my full name and I was so thrilled!!
I have one autographed by Buzz Aldrin, Encounter with Tiber. I got to meet him too. Awesome! Another is The Confessor autographed by author Terry Goodkind. It must have been an extra after a book signing because I didn’t notice until I got it home. Another is The Doctor’s Daughter: A Journey to Justice. Met the author Belle Blackburn for coffee one day for her to autograph several copies. She has a sequel to her book The Doctor’s Daughter: The Choice.
I’ve got a signed Anne McCaffrey book, won in a trivia contest (unfortunately never met her). I’ve got four signed books by Rhoda Wooldridge, who is a distant relative of mine, and three of those I found at Goodwill for 30 cents each, but I can’t remember where I got the fourth one. And my favorite so far, a copy of San Domingo signed by Marguerite Henry, with a copy of the program for the conference she was speaking at. I wish I’d gotten to meet her, but finding that book was good enough. Oh, and at least four that Doranna Durgin has signed for me.
Desi Arnaz’ “A Book”. I took a chance on a long lunch time to see him in person and he was so warm and gracious. There was a book for me and one for my Mom who had the same name as his mother- Dolores. His mother went by Lolita.
Cowboys Are My Weakness by Pam Houston. I read a review of her book in the LA Times in the early 90’s, bought her book, and asked her to sign it when I went to a book-signing event in San Diego. She commented then that it may be worth some money because it was a first edition. Well, that started me thinking about collecting first-edition books. . . . I still have her book (signed), among many others now.
I was gutted to have my autographed Handle With Care ‘borrowed’ by a friend as it had quite a personal message from when I met her. Treasure my James Patterson, The Jester, although far from one of his best projects.
I have two, and they’re both autobiographies by baseball players. I was able to meet my all-time favorite athlete, Ryne Sandberg many years ago and got my book signed. My brother just happened to be in the Atlanta airport on the day my second favorite all-time athlete, Chipper Jones, was doing a signing and he got one for me. ⚾❤
I have a copy of Death Comes to Pemberly signed by P. D. James and I have a copy of The Book of Three signed by Lloyd Alexander. I had to stand in line for 2 hours to get that one. I know it may not sound like much, but I won’t stand in line for anything, including renewing my driver’s license.
Several signed by David Sedaris. One from Sister Helen Prejean, Dead Man Walking. But, the best one of all is from Lincoln Hall, Dead Lucky. He died a few years after I met him. That just makes it more precious to me.
I don’t have an autographed book, but I have a first edition of Animal Farm, In Cold Blood, Death of a Salesman, Whitman’s translation of Dante’s inferno, and Childe Harold’s pilgrimage.
Just recently had the opportunity to attend a book signing by Elizabeth George. We chatted, then she signed her most recent book, The Punishment She Deseres
When I was a children’s librarian many years ago, I attended the Children’s Book Festival every year. One year I got to meet Beverly Cleary and she autographed a book for me. 🙂
I used to collect children’s books, so friends would give me any books that they might find interesting. I have been given signed copies of In Cold Blood by Capote, Prepared for the Worst by Christopher Hitchens and The Encyclopedia of Sex by Dr. Ruth. My most prized signed book, though, is a first edition of Abraham Lincoln: A Biography by Benjamin Thomas which I rescued from a dumpster, complete with dust jacket.
Several – Kinfolks by Gurney Norman Divine Right’s Trip by Gurney Norman Approaching Oblivion by Harlan Ellison Dance of Dragons by George RR Martin The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman Redshirts by John Scalzi … …. I have a small bookshelf full – there’s a few local bookstores who net great authors when they are nearby and I tend to grab them when I can stand in line. Sometimes just to hear an author speak makes me happy – and if you have never read Gurney Norman, check him out – the top 2 I listed by him are great, but very different books. I argue that you could but Divine Right’s Trip between On The Road and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and you would have a good, solidly odd road trip book collection.
Oh yes! Pete Hamill’s first novel ‘The Gift’, Cyndi Lauper’s Memoirs (she was my childhood friend growing up), Adriana Trigiani (she signed a couple of her novels for me at a book signing in Huntington, NY)
I collect signed books. I think I treasure two — one book signed by Helene Hanff (who I’ve met) and the other by an author I haven’t met — Maria Von Trapp
Me too. I saw the movie first because Ann Bancroft was in it. Left the movie never realizing I’d fall in love with the book and author — and eventually befriending her in her later years.
I had the pleasure of meeting Billie Letts at a book talk in a small town just outside Tellico Plains, TN. We exchanged teacher stories and she autographed my copy of Where the Heart Is with a personalized message. I also had the opportunity to meet Nicholas Sparks at a women’s conference. When I handed him my copies of A Walk to Remember and Message in A Bottle he told me that those were his favorites of all the books he had written because they were written about his dad and his sister.
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. I had a teen reading group at the library and she visited our town. One of the kids had her autograph it to my dog, Gretchen, as a joke!
My husband once stayed in the “Author’s Suite” at a well known Chicago hotel. It contained wall-to-wall bookcases filled with books. Every book was signed by the author, who apparently stayed there when they were on their book tour. Oh how I wish I had been with him on this trip!
the hotel was the Ambassador West, back in the early 90’s. He stayed there regularly for work and on this particular trip, he got the upgrade because they were fully booked.
The Facts of Life: And Other Dirty Jokes by Willie Nelson & Portraits of Courage by George W. Bush(which is a book signing event I actually got to work by passing books to him).
Named my first daughter after Meggie and she signed the book to her. Very sweet. She said half her books were signed to daughters named after that character.
Baa Baa Black Sheep signed by Pappy Boyington and the Japanese pilot who shot him down the last time. They were on a book tour and my dad drove me to see them ?
“We Thought We Heard The Angels” by James C. Whittaker. The complete epic story of the ordeal and rescue of those who were with Eddie Rickenbacker on the plane lost in the Pacific….I was at an estate sale. I did not know until later that the sale was a single military man who never married. HIs military uniform was still hung in a closet with his black/shiny shoes below. I came across this book, signed by the author. I was totally amazed! I love true stories, and this one is even signed by the author! I purchased it for a small price, can’t remember. Maybe 5 to 10 dollars. I still can’t believe it. It is an excellent read on survival. You could probably read it in 1 or 2 sittings. Ask an older person “Who is Eddie Rickenbacker?” See what you find. I have done this and it is amazing how big this story was at that time, but never made it in the history books…that I know of. Although Eddie Rickenbacker is in the history books somewhere …as I think he set a record for how many enemy planes he shot down in WWII. Awesome story…..very good read!! ..and I still have it!!
Eva’s Story by Eva Schloss – It was amazing getting to know a Holocaust survivor. Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories That Heal by Rachel Naomi Remen is very special to me. It is the book that saw me through my father’s struggle with cancer and his passing. It was a great honor to hear her speak.
This is the one for me. Harry Crosby was a much beloved lead navigator in the 100th Bomb Group, flying B-17’s out of England during WWII, and my dad was in the same Group. Since my dad, like most Vets of that era, never spoke much about the War, after he passed I was left to try to put together some of his military history. I encountered Col. Crosby at a book signing in Maine in 1993, and, not only did he sign his book and dedicate it to my dad, but, he put me in touch with some surviving members of my dad’s crew so that I was able to get some personal stories of their time together. “A Wing and A Prayer” is a wonderful history about the bombers flying over Europe during WWII, and, this copy is one of my most treasured possessions.
Oh, I hated hearing she passed away. I felt Kinsey was a friend that I could meet for bad wine at Rosie’s. I love getting lost in her mystery alphabet series since the 80s

Signed copy of Watership Down by Richard Adams found by chance in an English bookshop ?
I was gutted to have my autographed Handle With Care ‘borrowed’ by a friend as it had quite a personal message from when I met her. Treasure my James Patterson, The Jester, although far from one of his best projects.
Ray Bradbury’s
Pursuit of honor by Vince Flynn
Love Warriors
Pulitzer Prize winner Gilbert King The book is Devil in the Grove and Jimmy Carter’s book of his poetry.
A 30th anniversary edition of The Handmaid’s Tale, signed by Margaret Atwood.
Several signed by David Sedaris. One from Sister Helen Prejean, Dead Man Walking. But, the best one of all is from Lincoln Hall, Dead Lucky. He died a few years after I met him. That just makes it more precious to me.
This Much I Know is True by Wally Lamb
The Tenth of December by George Sanders and Krik? Krak! by Edwidge Danticat
The Gulag Archapelo
I have 3 books signed by their author, Susan Branch. ❤️

When I was a children’s librarian many years ago, I attended the Children’s Book Festival every year. One year I got to meet Beverly Cleary and she autographed a book for me. 🙂

Kinfolks by Gurney Norman
Divine Right’s Trip by Gurney Norman
Approaching Oblivion by Harlan Ellison
Dance of Dragons by George RR Martin
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
Redshirts by John Scalzi
…
….
Homer and Langley by E. L. Doctorow.
Oh yes! Pete Hamill’s first novel ‘The Gift’, Cyndi Lauper’s Memoirs (she was my childhood friend growing up), Adriana Trigiani (she signed a couple of her novels for me at a book signing in Huntington, NY)
Stephen King’s Danse Macabre.
Two. One David Sedaris. And one Junot Diaz.
I collect signed books. I think I treasure two — one book signed by Helene Hanff (who I’ve met) and the other by an author I haven’t met — Maria Von Trapp
I loved 84 Charing Cross Road!

Had a stack of inscribed books that were valuable. Gave them to my granddaughter.
My husband once stayed in the “Author’s Suite” at a well known Chicago hotel. It contained wall-to-wall bookcases filled with books. Every book was signed by the author, who apparently stayed there when they were on their book tour. Oh how I wish I had been with him on this trip!
We need to know the name of this hotel.
Me too. Go to the Walter Library on U of Mn. Camps. That will make your heart happy too since you missed your husband’s trip.
the hotel was the Ambassador West, back in the early 90’s. He stayed there regularly for work and on this particular trip, he got the upgrade because they were fully booked.
Yes, a copy autographed by the great Norton Juster himself – lucky me.
No kidding, what a treasure. Loved JUMPING TO THE ISLAND OF CONCLUSIONS.
Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

Awesome story Libbyl God Bless your Dad!
