I’ve read a study that it’s impossible to actually read or count in your dreams. They used it for a group of people that had a hard time distinguishing between reality and dreamland. So while you can see books, or “read a different unknown language” you can’t read in dreams, like I said, according to this study.
I was reading a book and fell asleep. I dreamed that I was still up and reading the book. I was confused the next day, since my dream made up different things that happened in the book.
Actually you can’t read while dreaming, because reading and dreaming are two different parts of the brain and they can’t work at the same time (at least that’s what science says)
Oh there is so much that ‘science’ can’t answer for… I have had many dreams of me sitting with a book and rolling over the words absorbing the story. It also doesn’t surprise me since I spend hours a day reading.
I’m no neuroscientist, but studies in the neuroscience of sleep were a significant part of my psychology training and as far as I’m aware, this is a myth. Do you have any citations for this claim?
So in other words, you don’t have any. There is some indication in the literature that cognitively challenging activities (this includes reading) often don’t occur in dreams or look different, however there are most certainly people who read in their dreams.
Further, multiple areas of the brain are involved in dreaming and the area that is less activated is not one in which people process meaning from visual information at all. So your suggestion that it’s about the specific area of the brain is not accurate.
I doubt that you’ve read many studies specifically about reading during sleep – it’s simply not a huge focus in sleep research.
I have experienced this! I try to read (usually out-loud, in a very public setting) and suddenly the letters make no sense! I obviously can’t read in my dreams?
I’ve dreamed that I was reading about a world where you were only safe when you were a sleep….. it was so real that when I woke up I wasn’t sure if I really needed to be awake or force myself to go back to sleep
I don’t think Ive read in my dreams but for sure I have been the main character in some of my books. I had a dream once I was attending Camp Half Blood when it was attacked by disney character Ursla.
No… but I hardly ever do “normal” stuff, like working in my dreams.
yes, but cudnt understand what language was that!
Mostly question papers.
I think about my current read in my dreams and often see the page I am on.
Cool I am not alone
Nt read but i m out shopping for books in almost every night’s dream??
Same!
I’ve visited a book store or 2 but don’t remember ever reading in a dream

I have
That’s not true. I have read in dreams. Not a whole book or anything, but a sign, sentence, etc.
I’ve read that study as well it’s due to the part of the brain that processes it all
Thank you @Stephanie!
I had heard that as well that you don’t read in dreams, I don’t recall reading but have had some unusual ones
Yes all the time!
I cant think of reading when dreaming because im too distracted of what my dream showed me?.
Yes…creepy
Oh thank goodness….I’m not mad! ?
Yes. Saw a mirrored sentence in my dream and worked out what it said. Have been able to read words backwards ever since.

Same here
Yes, and people say you can’t read in dreams.
Yes, I do.
Not sure but what I do hate is when I dream when I’m dreaming.
That has happened to me like two times and it was the weirdest and creepiest thing that I have ever been through when dreaming.
Yes and sometimes the book is brilliant! And when I wake I forget the wonderful story…

Well it didn’t happen to me, but it would be nice
Everyone is different… My bf of 18 years claims he doesn’t dream at all. I think not dreaming much is a sign of good mental health. ?
I’ve also dreamt very rarely in the last years and I hate it..
Hey might not be such a bad thing ??
Maybe, but I like to dream?
It sometimes can be a pleasant adventure for sure.
I dream of reading most nights.

I can’t remember right now exactly, but I’ve read many articles and studies on this topic

This article mentions a little bit about the concept though https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-to-control-dreams/

Yes lol
I try but it’s hard for me to focus on the words in my dreams.

Yes and some books are in my dreams and I don’t get a good nights sleep. Just like when I stay up late reading and have to be up early.
Yup, lots. I’ve dreamt of original stories, continuations of that day’s reading, and I’ve had regular dreams lapse into text.
No but I have woke up still holding my book upright in front of me while lying in bed. 45 mins after I last looked at the time ?
No idea though I do fall asleep thinking about one or two of the characters and wake up ready to see if I am right.
My dreams are often stories within stories with the plot device being reading
