I thought the first episode was okay, but loved the second. Like many TV adaptations atm they’re spinning it out too far imho -should be 2 eps, maximum 3; 4 is too many.
Yes – found it lacking in tension so far. Didn’t buy Ben Chaplin as sexy enough to seduce Emily Watson at that first meeting and as that didn’t convince me the rest just didn’t work. Haven’t read the book but watching it on screen doesn’t make me desperate to. TBH I was expecting a political thriller and its been neither of those things so far. Hoping the last two episodes will be better but not holding my breath.
I think either the BBC missold it or I misunderstood what it was about… either way I can’t help myself thinking of all the twists and turns I would have added to make it into a conspiracy thriller.
I’m watching, mainly out of interest to see what happens but I’m not hugely impressed. I have the book on my Kindle to read but not sure that I will now.
I have the book too but haven’t read it, I like Emily Watson and she is very good however I don’t buy Ben Chaplin as the lover maybe it’s the casting that has put me off
Yes- thought the book was excellent- supremely disappointed with other books of hers I have read. I agree that Ben Chaplin wasn’t eye candy enough to convince me. Not overly impressed with Emily Watson either- I agree with the lack of tension in the adaptation-could have been better in my view but the book is fab- especially the ending
I just finished watching on catch up and thought it was absolutely brilliant. I’d read the book & thought everything was captured so faithfully. I’ve read somewhere that the author is planning a sequel! Can’t wait to see where she’ll take the story. I hear the series got 6 million viewers.
I’ve been watching
Me!
Me too!
Yes but not so impressed so far
I think it is a good adaptation of the book so far.
Just read the book
Not impressed so far either I think I would have dumped the book .
I persevered with the book Sylvia. There was just something about it that I had to know how it ended.
not grabbing me like that
@Sylvia Over 2 years since I read it. I am not too sure if I would have continued with it now. It was one of my pre- kindle reads.
it’s very low on tension
Nope, gave this a miss!! Hanging in there for the return of Vera!
She is at the Harrogate Crime Festival this year
Bit slow for me…but will keep going to see if it picks up pace…never sure if they stretch things out to get more episodes for TV!
The book was rather stretched out too.
Watching it but haven’t read the book so can’t compare.

I think 3 would have been enough
Networks frequently buy TV in even blocks – so I’d bet 2 or 4 were on the table and they were worried 2 would not be enough.
Didn’t fancy the book but been recording the TV series, not watched any yet though!
Yes, loving it 🙂
Yes really enjoying it
Yes I’ve been watching!

I thought exactly the same about Ben Chaplin. He’s more sleazy than sexy – IMHO!
I envisaged someone sleazy when I read the book!
I wouldn’t have it pegged as a political thriller- it’s pretty much wife/affair/consequences sort of book
I think either the BBC missold it or I misunderstood what it was about… either way I can’t help myself thinking of all the twists and turns I would have added to make it into a conspiracy thriller.

Oh yes x
I loved the book and enjoying the TV series. Ben Chaplin is perfect IMO!
Yes. loving it.
Watched first episode didn’t do it for me
I have the book too but haven’t read it, I like Emily Watson and she is very good however I don’t buy Ben Chaplin as the lover maybe it’s the casting that has put me off
Emily Watson requested him for the part; they are good friends.
Wow that’s interesting I don’t think they have any chemistry together IMO
Do you think our dislike or like for an actor prejudices how we enjoy a series or film
Me but I haven’t read the book
Am also watching The Affair on DVD – there hasn’t been this much sex going on in my living room for many a year
Hahaha, I know the feeling!
love it had to read book 1st
I was going to ask did anyone have any theories about the story but I have noted that some havent watched it so I will leave it xx
This is a brilliant drama. It’s only when it finishes I realise I’ve been holding my breath for the most part of it!
Recorded it. Not watched any yet.
Me too Darryll
Yes. Dumped the book midway but the programme is ok
Yes!
