For me it depends on my moods and emotions. When I was going through grief for instance I needed gentle books.

I don’t like to have to think too much when I’m reading so anything but not a complicated plot.

I read a lot at bedtime so like short stories as I often forget the plot ?

Depends on genre. If it’s a crime or thriller then yes if not then it doesn’t bother me. I love to be shocked so if a book has a tag line about having a shocking twist you can guarantee I would pick it up.

I like the twists and turns as long as there is not so many characters or situations that I cant remember who is who or how they know each other or what relates to what and what is going on…that I hate. A good author keeps the twists and turns relevant and me knowing what’s going on, but not what is going to happen 😉 admittedly a delicate task 😀

Not too keen on easy reads. I love a plot with twists and turns!

Depends how well they are done 😉 Can’t be doing with twists for the sake of it which just become contrived.

Prefer a book with depth in but if it’s well written can do either

Twists and turns are great or that slow burning trying to figure out where it’s going, or thinking you know and then you don’t.

Unpredictable twists

Unpredictable twists, but also not this story has a twist you won’t see coming…erm…hello! Then looking for it.
However some layers are better than twists…as long as it isn’t all added in for another shock value…and undermines the story.

A twist you won’t see coming. All through the book I am trying to guess the twist. Sometimes the twist is then disappointing.

Exactly. I don’t mind working out twists…but, i don’t enjoy the book if i know as I’m looking for them

Puts me off if the book is advertised in this way.

Both at the suitable time and in a suitable amount. Depending on story. I love suspense, crime and action in a story but not when there is no comic relief/comfort relief in the novel. I give high importance to beautiful, lofty sentiments and a dreamily beautiful atmosphere. I love your surveys, Jason! 🙂

I don’t enjoy ‘nice easy reads’. I like novels which are stimulating and thought provoking and emotionally engaging. Twists and turns are great if they evolve from the plot and/or characters and genuinely involve a reversal or reveal. If they’re just plonked in, nope.

Ever read any books by Reginald Hill?

No. What are they like?

Reg Hill is a master of words. His books stimulate the brain. He wrote the Dalziel & Pascoe books. All of the books in the series are worth checking out

The more twists and turns the better – make me work hard!
