when I was young my favorite memories was of us reading Nancy Drew books together. We started even before I could read, but she was so eager to share the stories with me she would read them to me for hours every night. When I could read they were one of only two series I could be convinced to read until middle school. (Luckily they were both such large series that I never stopped reading during that time)

I gave my partner and me both new Kindle Fire books. I know, I know – I miss the smell and feel and covers of new books. The fonts and the feel of the paper. But as my father said, as you get older your eyes fail and the books get too heavy to hold. With a Kindle I can adjust the font size and chose the black background to prevent glare. And my library now lives by my bed and I can carry it in my purse. I’m about to go play on Amazon. Life is good!

Hope you/they enjoy it. P.S. I’m a 66, and the book continues to resonate with me the older I get. Says a lot about the decisions we make in life.

Sara

@William Good to know–my friends and I are all 68!

0

I’m sure that’s a young 68. As an aside check out “The Onion’s” recommendation to read a book for good brain health. Because it’s The Onion it is an R-rated public service announcement, but I think it will make you laugh. Just Google “The Onion – read a book.” Happy New Year.

I buy $2 and $3 Kindle books from daily emails from Book Bub and Early Bird Books. But if a book I want doesn’t ever get discounted that much, I put it on my Amazon wish list. The family shops from that at my birthday and Christmas. Some buy the book for me and have Amazon send me a link to download. Others send me a check and let me shop.

I received a book called Red Notice by Bill Browder. I started reading it immediately and couldn’t put it down. Just finished it this morning. It reads like a classic thriller about high finance, politics and murder but everything in it is true. It’s an autobiography that delivers in every way. Highly Recommend It!

A beautifully printed book from the Folio Society. I love books not only for reading but as works of art. Like many, I began to love books for the visuals. I just never stopped loving picture books and fairy tales.

That’s great that you make the holiday for when you can be together. I came from a family of nurses and military and our parents always flexed the holidays for when we could all be together.

It’s not about the DATE–it’s about FAMILY! Right?

I wasn’t given any books, but I did receive a lovely mug with a quote about reading, a matching reader’s wrap and fuzzy socks set, and a gift card to my favorite local independent bookstore. ❤️

That’s what I received and I did get a book bag for one of my daughter-in-laws from Monticello with the Thomas Jefferson quote about his love of reading. I got a Dobie mug and socks for her, too, since we all love Harry Potter?

I have been giving books to my family for the past 30 years. Everyone gets a book and a toothbrush with other things. Regardless of the additional gifts the book and the toothbrush are the most anticipated gifts. This year I gave my son Grapes of Wrath, my daughter in law got Circe, my grandkids got Alexander’s Terrible Horrible Day and Pig the Pug. I got Educated.

2

@Sheila I don’t either.

0
Toni

I have $175.00 worth of B&N gift certificates and just ordered 4 books. I buy them used and they last longer that way. Most of the books are only 6 months old and are in excellent condition. I refuse to spend what they want for a hard cover now days. Ridiculous.

4
Toni

Sam I have a hard time staying on a schedule knowing hey have to read a book in a certain time frame. It makes me too nervous so I buy them instead but at a very reduced

0
Toni

@Toni I do donate them to the library for their book sale when I’m done reading them so they can sell to raise money. I play it forward.

0
Patricia

@Sam Me too, I get on the wait list until the book is released.

1
Gary

@Toni if you have a dedicated e-reader just get the digital books from the library.

If you don’t have the time to finish the book before it gets automatically returned just turn off the WiFi and you can keep it indefinitely.

You can’t take out additional books in the mean time but who cares since you have an unfinished book to read!

1
Patricia

@Toni 2 weeks for a best seller and a month and renewable if not on the list. Can’t get better than that.

0
Sandra

@Toni I am sorry you seem to be so hostile to libraries many of which use that raised money to buy more books for the community.

0
Toni

Who said I was “hostile” to libraries?? That sure is a hostile comment and totally untrue. I, in fact, donate the books I read to the library to use for their bi yearly sale to raise money. I am awaiting your apology.

1
Toni

@Gary I don’t have one. I am a die hard, have to hold the books in my hand, type of reader.

I haven’t had time to read it yet. Am currently reading her non-fiction Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a year of food life, and truly learning from and enjoying it.
