Yes. I usually think the book is better and clarifies things left out in the movie. Am usualy disappointed in the movie if I have read and loved the blook first.
Yes. Watched The Secret Life of Bees with Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifa, Alicia Keys, & Jennifer Hudson. When my book club had the book as the January, 2019 selection, I wondered how the book would live up to how entertaining the movie was. Fortunately, both are amazing in their own way; loved them both! I would recommend reading the book AND watching the movie & enjoy.
Book first then movie.. Though I kinda lost interest since I already know what’s going to happen and also am tempted to point out inconsistencies which makes it even harder for me to appreciate it..
@Armi same here! and I thought I was the only one because of the paradox “the book is always better than the movie” I find certain book based movies to be fantastic too! Just my opinion. ?
I liked Stardust movie better than the book… And The Bridges of Madison county was better as a movie. The Hours is a tie, I love both the movie and the book ?
Yes. I did that with “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Room” — it wasn’t ideal because I had the actor’s faces in my mind instead of my own imagination, but the books were both terrific!
Yes. Movie first before book so I can compare the difference. I did this one with Nicholas Sparks movies and novels and Richard Yates’s Revolutionary Road of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
If I didn’t realize it was a book till after I saw the movie, most times yes. Except the YA genre. I never read any of the Divergent books, any of the Maze Runner books, or any of the Hunger Games books, but I’ve watched the movies & enjoyed them. Never read Ender’s Game either, but I liked the movie.
@Susan that’s on my reading list. I watched the movie years ago when it first came out (and I had a crush on a fellow who liked it), but forgot most of the movie (and also lost track of the fellow).
Yep the sense and sensibility film adaptation pushed me to read the book just to find out what was left out if the screenplay and inspired me to read all of the Jane Austen novels ?
When I was little, I read a ton of books that were based on a movie (not the more common way around). I remember reading all the Back to the Future books based on the 3 movies.
Once with Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. I saw the movie first and then read the book. Also with some Harry Potter movies. Usually I’ve already read the book before the movie.
Laura Taylor I saw Girl with a Pearl Earring years ago. And I just finished reading the book, like actually 30 minutes ago. I think I enjoyed both equally (maybe like the movie just a tiny bit more)
Yes. I read the revenant after watching the film. Glad I did because I really liked the film but probably wouldn’t have bothered if I’d read it first. The book was such a let down and the ending a massive anti climax!
I watched the Book Thief before I read the book. It took me awhile to enjoy the book, but I did in the end. There were books that I have read before I watched the movies, and in some cases, the movies are much better… not going to mention any coughSarah’sKeycough. I am so bloody bitter. I LOATHED that book.
@Lorna I needed something to put me in a Russian atmosphere and I’m loving my way through the audio books. If you like audio books, I recommend this series.
Yes, Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, the Talented Mr. Ripley. The first two I liked both, the third, i I thought the movie was better. Plus Gone With the Wind, Plus To Kill A Mockingbird, plus more I cant can’t think of right now. both good in either form.
Yes.. that usually how I end up reading a book , I see the movie or a tv series that I find good and then want to see the original writing.. its a 50/50 proposition … sometimes you love the book , other times you hate it ..,ppl who read the book first would say the same thing just flipped around
I usually read the book first lol
Yeah
The fault in out stars!
I saw the movie,
Haven’t read the book.
And it’s fault in our stars not out stars.
@Nitun the book is good
And yeah “our*”
Mistyping ?
Many times.
The last two books I’ve read, I saw their movies years ago.
Oh,
I was thinking I’m the only one.
Yes
Yes. The Great Escape, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption come to mind.
Yep, I started Brooklyn a couple of years after the movie
Yes. The Last Unicorn when I was young.
So are you old now???
Nitun Kothari Haha, no- I’m only 26, but I think my Master’s degree aged me by about a decade!
Oh,
Actually i was just kidding,
And I’m in that age now which you were talking about.
Yeah well it happens. Happened to me with a song of ice and fire.
Yes
Which one?
Harry potters series book
Oh,
That happens with everyone.
Yes
Yes
The Green Mile and loved both.
If I find out there is a book to a movie I will almost always read it.
But if you saw the movie and then get to know about book.
Then what will you do?
@Nitun I almost always read the book……
Yes, First Wives Club…book was so much better!
It always happens.
@Nitun, which is why I do my best not to watch the movie. I usually end up disappointed.
Yes, me before you. I didn’t know it was a book first. I also read the Notebook after seeing the movie.
No I always read the book first
@Carol same. There are some movies I want to watch (and tv shows too), but I’m making myself wait until I read the books.
No…don;t watch movies
Book first then movie.. Though I kinda lost interest since I already know what’s going to happen and also am tempted to point out inconsistencies which makes it even harder for me to appreciate it..
And it killes the creativity also.
Tell me about it..
Yes! One of my favorite things to do is combining a book with a movie or the other way around ?
But did you ever find a movie which is better than book.
@Nitun Yes, the Zookeepers Wife
Hmm, that’s good you foun but i never find.
@Armi same here! and I thought I was the only one because of the paradox “the book is always better than the movie” I find certain book based movies to be fantastic too! Just my opinion. ?
Yes of course,
Movies are also terrific.
But books are much batter in my opinion.
I liked Stardust movie better than the book… And The Bridges of Madison county was better as a movie. The Hours is a tie, I love both the movie and the book ?
Hmmm,
Very well done and good morning.
Yes. I did that with “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Room” — it wasn’t ideal because I had the actor’s faces in my mind instead of my own imagination, but the books were both terrific!
Yes that’s same problem I’m facing too.
Yes, I love watching The Princess Bride and am just now starting the book. Though I do prefer to read the books first if I know that it was a book.
Yes that’s always be a better idea.
Yes.
Yes, lord of the rings and the Martian
Nope. I have to read the book first.
I have done this many times!
Yes. Movie first before book so I can compare the difference. I did this one with Nicholas Sparks movies and novels and Richard Yates’s Revolutionary Road of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
I do this intentionally, so that I don’t hate the movie.
If I have read the book I usually don’t watch the movie and if I watched the movie I don’t read the book
@Eugene I’m totally the same way. I’ll say I’ll watch the movie sometime, but sometime never happens.
I did it with twilight ?
If I know it’s a book no but many times I watched a movie then found out it was a book and then read it.
Yes, Fight Club.
@Susan that’s on my reading list. I watched the movie years ago when it first came out (and I had a crush on a fellow who liked it), but forgot most of the movie (and also lost track of the fellow).
For me it’s gotta be book first.
Doing that right now!
Which one
Yep! It allows me to enjoy the movie.
Read the book. Never see the movie
I watched Maze Runner before I could read them , because apparently I live under a rock and had no idea that there were actual books to be read?
Once with Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. I saw the movie first and then read the book. Also with some Harry Potter movies. Usually I’ve already read the book before the movie.
Laura Taylor I saw Girl with a Pearl Earring years ago.
And I just finished reading the book, like actually 30 minutes ago. I think I enjoyed both equally (maybe like the movie just a tiny bit more)
I saw Hidden Figures and loved it but then I read the book and it was so boring to me I couldn’t finish it, even trying to skim through.
Yes. The book is usually do much better!
Yes, Ready Player One. I saw it in theaters and then got the book.
Yes
Practical magic and the movie is better
Lots of times.
Yes. I read the revenant after watching the film. Glad I did because I really liked the film but probably wouldn’t have bothered if I’d read it first. The book was such a let down and the ending a massive anti climax!
Yes a mistake
Dune
Yes.
The Paper Chase
Yes a lot
I saw the movie Gone Girl, then read the book. Always, the book was better than the movie.
I saw all the Harry Potter movies before reading the books.
Yes and the first time I did that I’m like, what? this did not happen! Then I kept reading and discovered the book version is so much better!
Jup
No I like book ? first
I watched the Book Thief before I read the book. It took me awhile to enjoy the book, but I did in the end. There were books that I have read before I watched the movies, and in some cases, the movies are much better… not going to mention any coughSarah’sKeycough. I am so bloody bitter. I LOATHED that book.
Under The Tuscan Sun.
Forrest Gump, liked the movie much better
Yep, read the Beach after seeing the film and also Watership Down after seeing the animation when I was a kid ?
The Nightwatch series by Sergei Lukyanenko. The movies were sort of ok but the books are AMAZING
@Madalina always wanted to try them
@Lorna I needed something to put me in a Russian atmosphere and I’m loving my way through the audio books. If you like audio books, I recommend this series.
@Madalina I have audible so will check out thanks
Love that series!! Read them years ago and have been meaning to reread it ?
@Lorna for some reason it’s not available on http://audible.com/ anymore but the books are still available on audible.com.au
Yes. Many times.
It actually helped me read Lord of the Rings because I didn’t have to imagine what an Ork or an Ent was. Peter Jackson had already done it for me!
Not unless alot a lot of time has passed and i cant can’t remember the movie very well. Lol… otherwise i feel like its it’s a waste of time
yes
Yes. And always very happy because it tuens out sooo much better than the movie.
It always happens.
I saw The Blind Side and I had no idea it was based on a book until I saw the credits in the intro
Yes. Wild by Cheryl Strayed
My favorite stories of all time I discovered by watching the Lord of the Rings.
I read the Divergent and the Hunger Games books after seeing the first movie in those series. Percy Jackson too.
The Girl on the Train. I found the movie a good adaptation but I didnt like either
I did with orient Express ??
what a mistake! I never watch the movie before reading the book. It totally ruins it for me
Yes
At first sight
Its based on a true story the book was awsome
Yes, Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, the Talented Mr. Ripley. The first two I liked both, the third, i I thought the movie was better. Plus Gone With the Wind, Plus To Kill A Mockingbird, plus more I cant can’t think of right now. both good in either form.
Yep Nerve one of the worst books I’ve ever read. They improved the storyline, characterisation, and ending in the movie.
Yes, Call Me By Your Name.
Me too. I wouldn’t have heard of the book otherwise. I actually preferred the movie!
But why should i call you by my name.
Often.
Never
The princess Bride. The movie was better ?
Watched the first Harry Potter movie before I actually sat and read the book
No ..Somehow if I know what the story is all about and especially the end ..I tend to lose interest in the book
Yes.. that usually how I end up reading a book , I see the movie or a tv series that I find good and then want to see the original writing.. its a 50/50 proposition … sometimes you love the book , other times you hate it ..,ppl who read the book first would say the same thing just flipped around
Yes, I think in my case it’s probably better. I enjoy the movie a lot more if I see it first.
Thank you everyone,
It was my first post so thank you so much for your comments.
I did, and it’s “No country for old Man”
Quite a lot I actually prefer to now
@Shiva here
@Shiva where are you dear?
Lord of the Ring, vampire diaries, ps i love you, angels and demons and many more.
? I’m old school. The book was meant to be just as it is. The movie was meant to be screwed around with to make more money.
The fault in our stars, divergent, the darkest minds, everything everything
