Honestly, I can’t read about teenagers 16/17 or younger doing wild things, or going on crazy adventures, because it just doesn’t pull me in as much as it used too.
This is understandable, and applicable to some books. However, there are just books that displays how obvious the difference was between teenagers and adults, especially when it comes with maturity and decision-making.
I’m good with YA that leans more on substantial matters, like discussion of grief or abuse. But sometimes, reading YA just reminds me of why I disliked some classmates back in high school. It’s like I’m reading a book about them.
I try to avoid the ones where they are physically in high school 6 hours a day because I just can’t… But I don’t mind fantasy or dystopian stories with teenagers. People in books my age are always burying a parent or husband or trying to find out who kidnapped their kid or getting cancer.
@Tricia mine is a dystopian and my girls just trying to survive in a world saturated by the commercialized sex industry. Glorified Handmaid’s Tale for young adults. Sensual and gritty.
@Tricia amazing! I wish more did it! We came close but the domestic one we checked out wouldn’t allow us to choose a girl and we definitely are an all girl family, except for my husband lol. India was set on our hearts though. Most violent country in the world for females and more child brides than anywhere in the world. Someday we’d like to look into foster care or single moms outreach
Yes!! I know what you mean. I just finished A discovery of witches series and it was older characters and I really appreciated that. But I like the teens too, makes we wish to be young again.
Yeah, I’ve had to start incorporating more new adult/adult into my reading. I’ve also found that, especially with contemporary, I can’t really relate to their problems anymore either ?. YA fantasy/SciFi isn’t too bad though
I do like reading YA contemporary. Teenage drama and angst are well-appreciated! But sometimes how teenagers deal with their problems make me cringe. I get that they’re young and makes these kinds of mistakes. But reading stupid decisions after stupid decisions is exhausting ?
@Vince yes that’s exactly it, you worded it better than I could! I can relate on a level that I’ve gone through similar things, so I appreciate that aspect. But more often than not, how the characters approach the issues are so cringe worthy. I’ve also noticed that a lot of YA contemporary relies on miscommunication as the source of the problem, and I don’t know I just can’t handle miscommunication. It’s so frustrating.
But I do appreciate YA contemporary books, I’ll still read them. Like you said, I get that they’re young too but I hate cringing when I read anything ?
Wow, we approached this particular problem in YA in an articulated manner. ? I agree with everything you just said. YA is greatly appreciated, but sometimes reading about cringey teenagers is frustrating.
Sometimes and I usually take a break when I feel like that. I try not to read books that revolve around high school and stuff because that’s usually when I end up feeling that way.
I enjoy the characters who are 18 to 24ish I dont want to read about adults in their 30s because thata where i am and when i read I like to tske a break from adult life and relive what its like to experience the 1st of being young
I love YA but I read a variety of genres. I just really love fantasy and science fiction sometimes that is more accessible in YA because they tend to be quicker reads but I love all the books.
for me its kinda like i become the person telling the story so i never get tired. characters are different and very few have any similarity to how my life has gone so its always a fresh perspective? then again there are some main characters that just get on my nerves??♀️ America singer from the selection series being one… if u havent read… dont?
The emotional truth in every characters hook me up. Yes, every characters are relatable one way or another. Facing difficult choices, accepting your own sexuality, dealing with family problems. But yes, like you said, some teenage characters exhaust me, kinda like reading about your annoying friends who keeps on making poor decisions ?
New Adult is where it’s at
Honestly, I can’t read about teenagers 16/17 or younger doing wild things, or going on crazy adventures, because it just doesn’t pull me in as much as it used too.
@Emma travel diaries of the dead and delusional is the only one I’ve been able to get into lately!
When you grow up, some things that teenagers do make you cringe, especially if you did them too when you were younger
Whenever I read about teenagers I get to be one again; so no.
@Margaret agreed!
When i read i dont really worry about the age of the character i just read story and forget the ages
This is understandable, and applicable to some books. However, there are just books that displays how obvious the difference was between teenagers and adults, especially when it comes with maturity and decision-making.
@Vince Thats also true
yeah, i’ve been having a really hard time getting into YA lately
I’ve been having trouble connecting to ya lately especially the real teenagey/high school type stories.
I’m good with YA that leans more on substantial matters, like discussion of grief or abuse. But sometimes, reading YA just reminds me of why I disliked some classmates back in high school. It’s like I’m reading a book about them.
I try to avoid the ones where they are physically in high school 6 hours a day because I just can’t…

@Emily you had me at “sensual” ?
@Tricia the steam picks up as you go through the book series. Gets more complex with the Museums and the beautiful gowns!
@Tricia bonus: proceeds go to two wonderful causes! Trafficking rescue AND our India adoption fund!
@Emily that’s awesome. I adopted from US foster care.
@Tricia amazing! I wish more did it! We came close but the domestic one we checked out wouldn’t allow us to choose a girl and we definitely are an all girl family, except for my husband lol. I usually break it up. YA then adult. I like do Highschool drama though even at 30 lol
I do that too
Breaks from YA is good, yes. Just to freshen up the mind from teenage dramas.
New adult is the booming genre!
@Emily any recommendations?
@Hayley anything by Laney Wylde
https://www.amazon.com/Laney-Wylde/e/B07FLVVV19/ref=dp_byline_cont_ebooks_1
Yes!! I know what you mean. I just finished A discovery of witches series and it was older characters and I really appreciated that. But I like the teens too, makes we wish to be young again.
A good balance between YA and Adult is always nice.
Yep I’m reading in a dark dark wood by Ruth Ware.
I like the writing style of this book! Atmospheric and creepy. The ending is very predictable, though.
Yeah I’m finding that teen angst is getting on my nerves
I like teen angst. Heck, I LOVE drama. But sometimes reading how teenagers deal with it is exhausting.
@Vince yes I agree. Its exhausting
Yep sometimes
I just finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman, had to take a break from YA.
Yep, a break from time to time is what I’m talking about. I sometimes read nonfiction, too, aside from adult novels.
@Vince I am also reading Medieval and Early American Lit for to of my classes my brain needed a break.
Yeah, I’ve had to start incorporating more new adult/adult into my reading. I’ve also found that, especially with contemporary, I can’t really relate to their problems anymore either ?. YA fantasy/SciFi isn’t too bad though

Sometimes though, I’m in the mood for high school drama ?
When taking a break, I read adult and nonfiction.

I can’t read teen books anymore I’m more into romance right now
Occasionally but I don’t know what else to read. I wanna start reading new adult but I don’t really know of any good NA books.
Hmm. You might wanna try adult or nonfiction? Just to freshen up from YA?
I may ask my boyfriend. He tends to read stuff more along that genre thanks.
Not really. I find I relate to teens more than adults.
for me its kinda like i become the person telling the story so i never get tired.

As I’m in my last year of being a teen I say naahhhh
