Loved both. Do not make Bleak House your first read of Dickens works though, his writing style is a bit unique, takes a few books to understand his writings.
Both are superb. “A Tale of Two Cities” was my favorite Dickens book until I read “Bleak House.” I read somewhere that “Bleak House” was the first book ever to feature a detective as a major character. Cool!
I haven’t read Crime and Punishment since I was in high school (40+ years), but I remember enjoying it very much. Bleak House is one of my favorite Dickens novels, and he’s one of my favorite authors.
The whole novel comes into being just bcoz of d pride of Roskonikov, who believes he’s a prophet of sorts… To an extent even his sis Duniya exhibits pride…. As for pride…. As the novel slowly progresses it breaks the prejudice of the characters against Sonia (against her profession in fact) and of the readers and characters against Svidrigailov..
@Jesus yes, but pride and prejudice is about first impressions mainly, the original title of Austen’s novel. So neither Darcy nor Elizabeth are truly what they seem.
Not first impressions alone.. Coz then it would mean Darcy has pride and Elizabeth is prejudiced… But as the novel progresses one gets a feel that the reverse could be true as well… Elizabeth is proud and Darcy is prejudiced… Then again I don’t intend to say that Crime and Punishment is about impressions, nor am I comparing it with Austin’s, but just that pride and prejudice are themes in here… Thus a darker Pride and Prejudice..
@Jesus yes, both have both traits but not really, Elizabeth is not too proud to apologize and Darcy not too prejudiced to accept the truth. That’s what I meant. Anyways … they sure have those traits but deep inside they are both better than that. I think your thoughts are interesting. I will try to keep them in mind once i pick up crime and punishment again
Jesus Sivasankar yes, but Elizabeth admits that he has hurt her pride and he is prejudiced against her family. I think Austen meant both have both traits, but most people think he is pride and she is prejudice, while to me it was always first the other way round bc he first hurt her pride by dismissing her beauty and then he showed prejudice against her rank.
I agree… He’s prejudiced against her family.. But also she’s prejudiced against him (regarding Wickm)… She’s not that proud that she apologizes… But again he is not that proud that he proposes even for the second time… As u said I like to believe Austin meant both to have both…
A bit of Crime book and Bleak film.
Yes, both were a job.
Absolutely love Bleak House. I’ve read it twice. It’s a complex and mature work.
I’ve avoided C and P so far.
Crime and Punishment is unforgettable.
I’ve heard good things about it, and I just love Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Yes to Bleak House. Poor Lady Dedlock. Spends her time trying to find love only to be betrayed
I have read Bleak House twice. I started Crime and Punishment but never finished.
Loved both. Do not make Bleak House your first read of Dickens works though, his writing style is a bit unique, takes a few books to understand his writings.
I’ve seen the Bleak House series but never read the book. Crime and Punishment is on my list of classics to read!
+1 for Crime and Punishment ❤️ loved that book ❤️
Crime and Punishment, i should revisit it….

I haven’t read Bleak house, but I’ve read several of Dostoyevski, including Crime and Punishment — A must read! Love it!!
Read both. Loved Crime and punishment
Crime and Punishment yes, Bleak House no. Is it bleak ? I love Dickens, so I will give it a try.
I tried Bleak House and gave up – I might try again though!
Crime and punishment is excellent ? I’ve. Not read bleak house yet but I have it on my tbr shelf.

Crime and Punishment… A darker version of Pride and Prejudice
I have never looked at it this way
I am not saying it’s a darker version of Austin’s book… Just that Pride and Prejudice r d main themes of Crime and Punishment
@Jesus in what way?
The whole novel comes into being just bcoz of d pride of Roskonikov, who believes he’s a prophet of sorts… To an extent even his sis Duniya exhibits pride….

Your own words ::: Darcy is not too proud to apologize (and even propose for that matter) and Elizabeth is not too prejudiced to not accept the truth…

@Jesus sense and sensibility at least is pretty clear in who is who ?
Absolutely.. No doubt in that… I finished it just 10 days ago… ??
