Audrey

Teacher. Currently 5th grade inclusion. Always taught ESE in some capacity.

4
Reply
SharonQuestion author

What type of inclusion? I work with children under the age of 3 who have a diagnosis of autism

0
Audrey

Varying exceptionalities. Most of them are SLD. I also have ASD, EBD, MH, and one that has PANDAS. HER LABEL IS OHI.

My county places them in regular ed classes as much as possible. So I am a 5th grade teacher but I have ESE kids also. I have 20 kids total, 10 with IEP’s, 1 has a 504. I also have one with autism that comes for math only.

3
Audrey

My school is also an ESE hub school. We have kids bussed in from all over the county. One wing is all self contained ESE. We have designated ESE classes for autistic, mentally handicapped, physically handicapped, Pre-k, and EBD on campus. The wing also includes rooms for all their therapies and a pool they use for PE if they can’t be included in regular PE.

1
Carmel

@Audrey wow… sounds busy! I’m a teacher too, with some training in Special Ed.. it certainly keeps us busy… currently taking a year off.. or as much time off before I go crazy!

0
SharonQuestion author

@Audrey that sounds amazing!!!

0
Audrey

It is very busy. Makes the days and year go fast. I do have a full time paraprofessional. I would go nuts without her. I have requested not to be inclusion next year so I can get a break from the extra load of work before I burn out.

1
Karla

@Audrey Wow! Where do you live?

0
Audrey

Marion county in central Florida

0
Audrey

@Karla we have 5 fifth grade classes. I have 1 of 2 inclusion classes. The other one has only 3-4 IEP kids but she also has more 504 kids. We each have our own paraprofessional and we had a support facilitator until medical issues made it so we lost that support person.

It is crazy but it works. The kids get intensive remediation and have made a lot of growth academically, socially and behaviorally this year.

2
Karla

@Audrey I live in a fairly rural area of Ohio and am amazed at the level of services you have and the facilities you need to provide them!

1
Audrey

Out of all the schools in my county only a few have this level of services. We have 1 school that is 100% ESE students and 3 hub schools. The rest may have only 1-2 ESE classes with therapists that are on campus 1-2 time a week. We have 45ish elementary schools. My district has over 42000 kids.

SharonQuestion author

What is CASA?

0
Jennifer

It stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate, and it’s a program in which volunteers work with children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Basically, you learn about the case, get to know the children and the adults involved, and work with DCS to make recommendations to the court about what should happen. You become a voice for the child in the courtroom. It’s a nationwide program which is always in need of volunteers — if anyone is interested and has a free hour or so a week, I highly recommend checking it out!

Wonder if you know any of my friends.

0

@Stephanie Have made it a priority in my life to stay thin and fit. Too many fat cops, plus I always felt I needed to be able to take action if I had too when on the street.Cant do that if I have to lug extra pounds to the fight. I used to be the designated Department runner. Knees have finally slowed me down but I’ll never quit. ???

Hang in there you are very close!!!! What are your plans after graduating?

1
Souha

Yes, but my days there seem to be suffering a wrinkle in time. Only they’re getting longer.

1
Souha

Thank you so much.

Plans after graduation?
I’m thinking probably psychology but I’m still not sure. I’m a science major so.. possibilities are endless!

1
SharonQuestion author

Keep your options open and your head up the finish line is in sight!

2

Thank you, really.
You’ve got no idea how much I needed to hear those words.

@Souha it will be worth it. Keep going 🙂

2

Where does an unemployed teacher go next??? (Me to 0-8 Aus) having a year off- where will that take me next?? I hope you get your dream job/ adventure next!!!

3
Karyn

Yes I’m from Christchurch but have moved a few times for work.
I’m applying wide for a primary position. I have only worked one day so far this year!

2
Carmel

@Karyn it’s tough – good luck!!

0
Karyn

Thanks. I know that I will get something soon! Yes it is hard, especially when it happens every year!

2
Karyn

At least it gives me plenty of ‘me time’! I have had plenty of time for reading, walking my dog and sorting my teaching stuff!

2
SharonQuestion author

Curious why does it happen every year?

0
Karyn

Most primary teaching positions are fixed term until the Christmas holidays. I’m trying to get a permanent position because I’m sick of it.

Or while i play minecraft with the kids. Nap times..bed times.. anywhere i am waiting for anything i have a book with me or on my phone. Ebooks have been the best for me but i get in other formats too.

If anyone has a visual or physical impairment, NLS is a free government service that will provide audiobooks to be played on a (free) government device or downloaded to your own device. There is a huge listing – the program has been going strong since the 1950s – with titles continuously added.

Where do you travel too? Mom goes to Florida every year

1

How cool is that? I have certainly been enjoying my retirement by indulging my love of travel.
Do you stay in RV campgrounds for a period of time? I have met some interesting people who travel to a National Park and stay there for a period of time volunteering/working.

2
Rebecca

This is my dream is to be a psychology professor! Just wish I had the money to finish schooling!

@Sharon, we have 2 grandchildren in Atlanta. We go for 2 weeks usually twice a year. We try to spend the 5 weeks from French Quarter Fest through Jazz Fest in New Orleans. We hit the beach near Panama City, Fl and visit friends in Alabama.
We go to several music festivals in Colorado in August and September. On the “odd years” we don’t go to Atlanta for Christmas so we head West.

1
Chan

@Bettie, we usually stay in RV parks, but love a state or national park. Right now, we are in a state park in Mississippi. Today we check into RV park in French Quarter for the month

@Marionna AMAZING! This brightens everything. I was so sad that they are on the endangered species list. If you could recommend to me (or anyone) what we can do to help giraffes, I’d love your advice!

1
Jessie

@Marionna I can’t handle this level of cuteness.

0
Marionna

@Monika that is awesome! Thank you for your passion and wanting to make a difference! That’s the only way things will change. Visiting and supporting your local AZA accredited zoo is a great way. We are involved in conservation projects all over the world. If you would like to donate to a great organization, I would recommend Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Our zoo has been funding a lot of the projects they are doing in Africa. You can also volunteer with them directly in the field! Here is their website https://giraffeconservation.org/

I love that we have multiple zookeepers in this group. There must be a connection between a love of animals and a love of books.

5
Melanie

@Guinevere many animal people end up in zookeeping because they are introverts and don’t do well with humans – it’s a physically demanding and involves a lot of cleaning, so we are not big on coming home to clean house – reading is the perfect r & r for us!
