Most of these novels were written as contemporary novels and as time passed they became historical fiction. What do you mean by “classic” historical fiction?
Classic literature with historical significance.
This might be a function of your particular country or as may be the case with the US, it may be a function of a specific region in that particular country.

People from Chicago and the surrounding MidWest know that the Chicago stock yards (the subject of The Jungle) no longer are in operation today to the extent they were in.the past on the SouthSide of Chicago.
There is only a very small scale, kosher slaughter business in operation today with 1-2 workers preparing the meat.
