Scott Pratt has a series available on Amazon that is fantastic! The main character is an attorney but he is close with the chief of police and the two of them bring crimes to justice. The series I am reading now is his Joe Dillon series which has 8 books in it. I read the third book in one night. I couldn’t put it down so I just kept reading. He has other books as well that I will be getting when I finish this series. I don’t know what the norm is for everyone here between a kindle, ipad, or real book. But Amazon has Kindle Unlimited for 10.66 and you can pull 10 books at a time that are designated Kindle Unlimited. The series I am recommending now has all the books listed as Kindle Unlimited. I have found many, many fantastic authors through Kindle Unlimited.
Dashiell Hammett and Mickey Spillane
Greg Iles is very good, Blood Memories or his the Bone tree trilogy is a good choice. Set in the south and he’s an attorney.
Try Margery Allingham for good, old-style detective mysteries with really different crimes. Or if you want something more modern, I would recommend @Denzil. Scottish detective fiction, gritty and realistic, great characters, fantastic books.
Thank you, Tabitha 🙂
It is but the unvarnished truth 🙂
There’s a series set in the Ottoman Empire called the yashim novels by Jason Goodwin.

Peter James first and foremost for me, also Stuart Macbride, the Logan Magrae books. Very dark but with wonderful laugh out loud moments to lighten the darker bits. Sorry about spelling of detective, having to guess it as am vision impaired! Enjoy if you try
I have recently read 3 great novels by Joy Ellis. New author for me but enjoying her books
I’ve really enjoyed her books as well, read all the Fens series
Have you tried the British Library series? They have a variety of detectives from the same era as Christie, from amateur to professional. If you want more modern day then I’d recommend novels by Sarah Hilary, Eva Dolan, Emma Kavanagh, Jonathan Kellerman, Donna Leon, Donna Andrews, Sue Grafton and Jane Casey.

Thank you, Charles!
I really depends what type of detective you like, if you’re looking for English based detectives I’d recommend, Mark Billingham, Peter Robinson & Peter James if you’re looking for American based detectives James Patterson ( Alex cross/ women’s murder club series) Michael Connolly and Lee Child ( his character Jack Reacher is a drifter who was a detective in the military police he’s very smart)
Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series (that is the characters real name.. but the books are serious and good)
No but needed. Harry Hole is, like his author, Norwegian and one doesn’t just pronounce his name as though it were English:
https://forvo.com/word/no/harry_hole/
@Thomas, the field is so vast and varied, we need to know what sort of crime fiction you think you might like: The midde-class English novel (often country house); locked room mysteries; tartan noir; scandinoir; police procedural; psychological thriller … the list goes on.
Estelle Ryan’s Genevieve Lenard series. It’s amazing!!!!
Very good book!

Jo Nesbo’s Inspector Hole series. ‘The Snowman’, for one.
Hello Thomas Ken. What specifically do you like?
If you like true-to-life, gritty crime thrillers, I can highly recommend @The and @The by David Videcette. His books are edgy, fast paced and based on real events.
