It’s mostly related to divergent and how the last book ended. And how she’s trying to get sales on carve the mark by adding an epilogue for Tobias.

No, they’re saying it’s racist

Melissa

Oh so there’s more… well this is interesting.

They’re saying it’s “another White Hero versus the Dark Enemy”–I haven’t read it (nor will I)

Melissa

I’m totally uninterested. I searched for we csn be mended spoilers, though.

Don’t make me read all this. ?

Melissa

I don’t wanna read either. Lol, give us a summary!!

0
Melissa

I skimmed the first few paragraphs. I like the divergent boycott of we can be mended story better, lol.

Cinda

Article says that the book says
Dark skin=bad, aggressor
Light skin= poor them feel bad for them. If you want a basic basic version.

Siri

@Kasey It’s basically saying “all the good, heroic characters are white, while the vicious, barbarian enemy are all dark skinned ignorant, etc”

Must be endorsed by Trump

@Melissa ??

Janelle

Yeah I read some of the article and it said something like that.

0
Cinda

That article pretty much says that in the novel the is a dark skinned attacker and poor white folks getting attacked, which is racist because dark skinned people are ‘always the aggressor and it’s a terrible trope.’

I almost sent Veronica Roth a flaming bag of dog shit because of Allegiant.

Oooh! Good idea! Let’s send her two! Do you have her address??

Shelby

Ugh, yes. I said I would never pick up another one of her books after that. Especially now after reading what carve the mark is all about.

1
Cinda

That ending was completely unnecessary and just put there to kill all of us inside.

0
Shelby

Now any book I read that seems like it could end in sudden death of the main character I’m like “please don’t Veronica Roth me”

6
Cinda

I like that you made her name into a verb that is excellent and accurate.

1
Jennifer

I never picked up another one of her books after that

????

I thought allegiant was the flaming bag of shit…

This one is even harsher! Apparently the “evil dark skinned savages” mark their skin every time they kill. Gives this cover a whole new grossness…

Holy buckets! Wth is this trope still doing around? And “evil dark skinned savages”? Are you kidding me?! I’m pretty disappointed as well @Siri! this is getting removed from my “maybe” list!!

1
Siri

Well, to be fair it was my mean interpretation to say “evil, dark skinned savages”, but yeah, the articles are pretty damning.

0
Cinda

Dang that was savage. What was she thinking, in today’s world, writing a story like this.

Thanks for sharing this review: I hadn’t heard any thing about the book. I’m glad I did

So…..The characters are pulling an Akiva

0
Cinda

I had to Google Akiva and there were so many possible meanings….. What is that

0
Siri

@Belu I’m not seeing the connection AT ALL Akiva’s father is one of the most evil villains I’ve read, and he himself is responsible for thousands of deaths—not to mention the chimera and seraphim are not “dark skinned and light skinned” at all, they’re winged humans vs. animal mash ups! And there was clearly no “good” side—Thiago was equally vile, although the Seraphim held all the power, so they were clearly the more villainous side! Are you saying not even ONE of them (Akiva) should’ve been able to think for themselves and realize war is wrong? Just cause you hate a story doesn’t mean the author has racist intent.

Belu

I meant, the marking when killing people. I’m sure there were some cultures who did that in real life, but I can’t help to think a bit of plagiarism

1
Belu

I’m not accusing the story of being g racists, if just that ONE specific thing that reminded me of akiva. ( Also, team chimera)

1
Siri

@Belu OH!!! You got me all fired up for a minute there! ? I didn’t catch the connection of tattoos on the hands with what people are complaining is “glorifying self-harm” (apparently the MC carves up her skin every time she causes pain—to punish herself)

Belu

Ohh dear… The problems keep popping up!

1
Siri

Ananya Bhatnagar It’s true non of us have actually read the book though. So there’s that.

Belu

I won’t read anything from her again. Unless everyone tells me is perfection

1
Alex

Also, one of the characters has chronic pain and it’s talked as a superpower, when in reality it’s not.
