I agree. The economy of his writing is amazing. He manages to pack in what would take most writers twice as many words. His stories appear simple, but say so much.
Andrea Carter, series set in Inishowen, with a solicitor as central character. Liz Nugent, brilliant stand-alones. Ken Bruen, series set in Galway featuring PI Jack Taylor (great TV adaptation starring Iain Glen). Brian McGilloway, Anthony Quinn, Declan Hughes, Tana French, Sinead Crowley, Claire McGowan, Jo Spain, Stuart Neville. Eoin McNamee, both fiction and true crime based fictionalisations. Benjamin Black’s 1950s Dublin Quirke series. And that’s only scratching the surface.
@Moira She is such a good writer and a great person. Met her a couple of times at the Bookouture events and chat a lot to her here when we’re both struggling with deadlines. We share the same editor. 🙂 x
Frank McCourt, Angela’s Ashes… Nora Roberts who wrote many trilogies that take place in Ireland. Kathleen Grissom who wrote that wonderful book, The Kitchen House, Tana French who is one of my favorite thriller writers and Samantha Young, an excellent writer, who pens adult dramatic romances, and they all take place in Dublin.
There’s a novel I read about an Irish boy, from a working class family in Ireland (can’t remember the town) who grows up to be a classical dancer, (in the beginning it was much to his father’s chagrin that he would be practicing dance moves instead of playing football with his mates. Does anyone know the name of this book. I think his nane was Billy.. I can’t remember…
Ken Bruen (who was kind enough to write an endorsement for my first novel – my little claim to fame), Louise Phillips, Tana French, Benjamin Black, Patricia Gibney, Derek Burke, Jane Casey, Andrea Carter – they’re all favourites but there are so many more!! I review fiction for Crimesquad and get sent so many novels from up and coming authors.
Not crime but set in Ireland: Colm Toibin, John Banville, William Trevor early Edna O’Brien, Anne Enright, Brian Moore, especially I Am Mry Dunne and The lOnely passion of Judith Hearne. You are in for a treat 🙂
