J A Dunphy, I stayed up all night to finish the first book and pre bought the second book for Kindle and booked the day off work the day it was released.
This was a recommendation, I think it may have been Susan. I thought I would give it a try and her detective Lottie Parker did not disappoint, her new one is out 3rd October I think.
Not heard of Sheila Bulger before. Read every book by Tana French. I do admit that i struggled with her last book. I am looking forward to her forthcoming book
@Jason took me a while to settle into her most recent story, but the protagonist finally clicked. Broken Harbour by far my favourite. Try S Bugler, set in South London,great story telling, and fascinating characters.
Of the female ones, Tana French, Alex Barclay, Jane Casey, Sinead Crowley, Jo Spain, Sam Blake, Louise Phillips, Niamh O’Connor, Claire McGowan, Arlene Hunt, Andrea Carter, Andrea Mara, Cat Hogan, Catherine Ryan Howard, Karen Gilleece and me. I’m only mentioning the women here because I wrote about the explosion of Irish female crime writers for an American website recently. https://crimereads.com/the-gothic-horrors-of-1980s-ireland/
I am surprised that @Catriona isn’t mentioned much in this discussion. Her Craig Series is addictive. Each book is a case and the characters develop throughout the series. The reader feels he/she is part of the team. Already 18 books and I am waiting expectantly for 19 out in October.
@Jason there is a humour and gentleness to her writing which pulls you in. All set mostly in N.Ireland but each case is different and some with international elements.

Arlene Hunt is brilliant
I’ve read and enjoyed several of those. Didn’t realise they were Irish, though – not that it matters. Good is good, wherever it comes from.
James Patterson’s great grandmother may have been Irish!
I am surprised that @Catriona isn’t mentioned much in this discussion. Her Craig Series is addictive. Each book is a case and the characters develop throughout the series. The reader feels he/she is part of the team. Already 18 books and I am waiting expectantly for 19 out in October.
One person has mentioned her. Must go & seek her work out
@Jason there is a humour and gentleness to her writing which pulls you in. All set mostly in N.Ireland but each case is different and some with international elements.
I did Pauline!
@Christina I am hooked – are you?
Read them all. Only started in Jan. Love them.
She is certainly prolific
@Jason she is a hard worker. Is a doctor and has forensic experience and it shows.
Thank goodness. I get withdrawal symptoms.
You’re very kind, @Pauline, @Christina. Thank you both for such kind mentions

Love the gentleness and humour comment. I’d never thought of my murder novels in quite that way, given the trail of bodies I leave in each one

@Catriona Yes I know what you mean. But there is…..
Gerald O’Donavan.
@Kevin, @Patricia, @Adele & @Maria all brilliant writers
@Mary Thank you so much. ?
@Maria you are most welcome x
