I’m the same. The written word is very forgiving. And as a grown up, I do have bad dreams, but usually from movies and I simply understand it as my brain working through what I saw. It doesn’t leave me frightened or scared. Just frustrated.
I’m just not easily scared. Books or movies, it doesn’t matter. In fact, I’m a fan of horror movies and I like to be scared, but most things don’t scare me for very long. I don’t even remember the last time I had a nightmare.
Dr. Sleep has a neat father/son reference to Nos4a2 in it that tickles me every time I read it. I love that he and his son have kept it in the horror family
In Stephen King’s Night Shift collection is a short story called “Graveyard Shift.” It scared me when I first read it in 1970. It scared me again when I read it again in 1981. I read it just a few weeks ago, and, even knowing what was coming, it was mighty scary.
Have you ever read the Darren Shan books? The Demonata Series? Book 1: Lord Loss was pretty crazy. I don’t know what scares you or anything but this one is pretty graphic and disturbing. I couldn’t believe is was in the “Young Adult” section.
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It’s an ergodic novel so it’s difficult to read and comprehend at first, but when you get used to it, the story flows easier and you’re in for a heck of a ride. It messed me up for a few days. If you want a challenge with your nightmares, that’s the one. He also wrote a companion novel, The Whalestoe Letters.
The Ritual, or Last Days by Adam Nevill Naomi’s Room by Jonathan Aycliffe The Elementals by Michael McDowell, his dialogue is genius and completely captures Southern Gothic. I’m current reading HEX by Thomas Olde Heuvelt and it’s brilliantly creepy so far.
@Sayantan – feeling the fear awake is still way different than nightmares. Loving a scary story is fine. I do too. But I don’t want nor relish nightmares. And I rarely get them in the sense of having scary dreams. I often rehash imagery from books or movies in my dreams, and this leaves me frustrated sometimes, but I don’t WANT to be scared in my dreams. And it was no judgement. I understand people are different. It just seems very strange to me.
Shirley Jackson had a book of short stories that would curl your hair…. “The Lottery” The title story is not technically a ghost, but it WOULD give you nightmares.
Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files, while amusing sometimes, have some scary stuff. Simon R. Green’s Nightside and Secret History novels are very worth reading. Ghouls and goblins and other monsters: Oh my!
Thanks to all of u for suggesting these books .I’ll try all of them I promise .After a little researching on all of these books I chose “it” by Stephen King as my first read .Thanks once again.

Amityville Horror scared the crap out of me
Scared the crap out of me very time I read it!
If you want to go way back to the early 20th Century, read some works by H.P. Lovecraft.
“Dagon” (novel) or “The Colour Out of Space” (short story ) by Lovecraft are very scary…
You can’t go wrong with Lovecraft’s classic novel, The Dunwich Horror.
Zodiac.

Ghost Story by Peter Straub
So I am just wondering why anyone would WANT nightmares ?
Why not? Sometimes a good, scary story that causes nightmares is good for the soul. Again, different literary strokes for different literary folks.
I like a scary story, but nightmares just leave me tired and frustrated. But like I said, I am just wondering…
Sometimes feeling the fear in real life is the part of a experience we extract from the book .
@Stephen I was wondering that myself. Perhaps she wants to distract herself from something….

Mmm its okay, I like real life feelings…
Just expressing how scary she wants the book to be. Not a young adult “scary” book or lame scary book probably.
Hellhouse by Richard Matheson? It was pretty scary.
Shirley Jackson had a book of short stories that would curl your hair…. “The Lottery” The title story is not technically a ghost, but it WOULD give you nightmares.
