Are you primarily wanting to understand brain structure and neurobiology, or how our mind works? Daniel J. Siegel has written quite a few books on the subject, mostly geared to the developing mind (children and adolescents), and understanding how to use that information to optimize well-being. The Mindful Brain might be a good general one to consider. His writing on the subject is accessible to the layperson, and offers a good balance between emerging information from neurobiology, and distinguishing between the brain and the mind, and psychological implications of that.
