I hate to spoil it, but Captain Ahab spends the entire book chasing but never does get Moby Dick.
Why? Do you not like a happy ending?
A protagonist can end up without the ‘love interest’ and still have a happy ending. Suppose the love interest turns out to be a shallow, static character and the protagonist outgrows them during the course of the book. =)

You do not need a partner to live happily ever after. I was just looking for books like that. 🙂

Word and Void series. Main female character definitely gets a date with the boy she like in the first book but she is like 12. She doesnt have such luck the next two books when she is older

The hero wasn’t even interested in the main female character.
All the more reason to see it as the hero not getting the girl.
Not getting the girl would mean that he had an interest in her though, she was never “the girl” for him. And he gets the girl, spoiler alert but ..Ginny?
