I might get hate for this.. Lord of the Rings… I couldn’t finish the books.. too long winded but I loved every movie

Well, I’ve never been able to get far into ANY Tolkien book, yet I enjoyed the film adaptations. I’d been able to finish Gone With the Wind, Les Miserables, War and Peace, even. But Tolkien? Sorry.

0
Fiona

@Emmanuelle yes I read extensively but Tolkien… I don’t know if I’ll ever achieve them

1
Emmanuelle

I’m unlikely to try again. Lol

2

agree! I have read lord of the rings trilogy but didn’t enjoy them as books, but the films are up there amongst my favourite ever x

@Sandra yes, but I enjoyed the first movie much more than the first book. I didn’t like Mary Poppins the character at all in the books. Julie Andrews is just magic.

1
Sandra

Yes she was but not a true representation of the character in the book at all.

0
Jessica

@Sandra Right. That’s why I liked the movies better 😉

0
Jessica

Sandra Henderson Did you see the most recent Mary Poppins Returns? I thought Emily did a better job representing the book character. Great movie, too.

0
Sandra

@Jessica yes, it was lovely. She’s definitely a bit closer to the character in the book.

I hated Mary in the books. Loved both Julie Andrews and Emily Blunt.

@Debora You might want to try a different translation. I read one that was like trying the run in mud and then picked up a different translation that was so lyrical it was like poetry.

I hated the film version of my sisters keeper because they changed the ending and made it too predictable much prefer the twist at the end.

1
Lucy

@Wendy I hated the book because I thought it was too heat and tidy and far fetched.

0
Wendy

@Lucy Hmm I can see where you are coming from there I have to say it isn’t my favourite of hers but I just felt the film ending was too stereotypical.

Would I be controversial in saying ‘Game of Thrones’?

0
Reply
Amber

@Aimee a little bit. Because they branch AWAY from the books after awhile. Can’t finish a tv show following the books when the man won’t finish the darn things.

0
Aimee

@Amber I reread all the books in anticipation of Mr Martins finale – but to no avail. I am currently reading his latest addition Blood and Fire – 300 years of Targaryen history. BUT its not as gripping a read when telling a tale in retrospect. I gave up resisting the HBO version of events- I was a purist for a while then binge watched the whole thing in a matter of a week. Its a love/hate thing.

@Eileen loved the book so much, and didn’t know it was a movie as well. Who starred?

I thought both the movie and the book of Howl’s Moving Castle were great, the stories are very different though the characters and setting are the same. Though that was an animated adaptation from Miyazaki on Diana Jones’ book.

0

@Jenny don’t be talking about my twilight! I might just get as mad as a Harry Potter lover that’s been disagreed with! Lol joke. I liked it bc of the twist at the end where after they’ve shown the fight do we realize it was just a vision. I was going crazy! I was going “that didn’t happen!” Etc… my daughters were with me and going “calm down! Shhhh!” lol. It’s one of those you either love or hate. No in between

@Cassie agree yet somehow I’m interested in reading the upcoming sequel, the testaments

0
Cassie

@Jennifer oooh there is a sequel? One thing I hated about the book is that I felt like the ending had been ripped out. I was reading a copy from the library and literally checked the internet to make sure I read the ending. It felt like the author just wanted to stop writing. It was very frustrating!

But I also felt like the show added a ton throughout the story, that I felt was missing from the book.

This is the only time I’ve ever liked a tv/movie adaptation better than the book.

0
Jennifer

That was my experience too. Atwood’s sequel will be out this year. I don’t think it’s published yet.
