I could read the front page of a major metropolitan daily newspaper fluently and without hesitation or guessing or such on my third birthday.

I could read and write pretty well before I started primary school here in the UK.

It’s something parents should teach their kids before they even start school, as far as I’m concerned. The role of teachers at school is to build upon that foundation which the parents have laid.

As a reading specialist and educator with 26 years experience teaching early reading, I’m going to tell you that all kids are different. What would the benchmark be for this time of year? Blending easily cvc words, ability to automatically read a minimum of 40 aight words, read simple decodable text and write one to two complete sentences with periods and capitals and phonetic spelling. Please remember that some children struggle with the code, it doesn’t mean they won’t read, it simply means they need more time and good explicit and systematic instruction. Sorry for the rant.

Children learn at different paces & the best way to teach is to keep reading fun, you should never compare your child to another ๐Ÿ™‚

Kids should be able to learn reading at their own pace and not be rushed as they are here in the USA with constant worksheets being sent home in Kindergarten. Studies have shown the pressure we put on young children in the early years like Kindergarten with homework, work sheets and so on doesn’t benefit them in the least compared to how other countries educated their Kindergarten children like Finland for instance. Learning reading should be kept a fun process, by doing this reading will be a life long pleasure and you will end up with life long readers.
