I’ve heard good things about Why I’m Not Talking To White People About Race… if you’re looking for historical subject matter, Book of Negroes was fantastic.
I have to do a presentation for school. So, I chose SONNYS blues by James Baldwin. And asked the professor for end of February. I could chose any short story in our textbook, but that’s what I decided.
Americanah was good. Between the World and Me was a great opinion piece. The Hate U Give should be on your Must Read list. Homegoing was also a great book that resonated. I think the key to reading during Black History Month is to just support black authors…doesn’t necessarily have to be historical or about civil rights.
Oh, and I’m an author too. Lol. I’d recommend for contemporary romance, Breaking Mobius. For action/espionage/suspense then read Girl Soldier. By pen name is T.R. Horne
The Blood of Emmett Till, Slaves in the Family, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, The Hemingses of Monticello, I have a pretty extensive black history library…
@Kelsey anytime! I am currently reading Slaves in the Family by Edward Ball, but I think the Branch books will be my next ones. I usually try to read one non-fiction and one fiction book at the same time

The Hate U Give was excellent!
Got that yesterday. It’s on my bookshelf ready for reading.

Roots was a good read
I love Maya Angelou
New People by Danzy Senna, Citizen by Claudia Rankine, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Any of Maya Angelou’s autobiographical books. Jacqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming is wonderful – a memoir in poetry.
Roots and Cane River and Property
Fiction: Calling Me Home
Non-fiction: Taylor Branch’s three volume history on the civil rights movement
Invisible Man by Ellison. Classic!! Also, Sing Unburied Sing. On my TBR list.

The Taylor Branch ones, Pillar of Fire, Parting the Waters, At Canaan’s Edge…
I’v heard they are amazing and I was able to get all three from a used bookstore near me.
Ignore the others but roots, queen, and mama flora’s family were the ones I intended on showing you lol
