Books in which you get lost in a world? Thinking Night Circus … Philip Pullman … Victoriana. Not keen on orcs and dragon-style fantasy but not averse to a bit of magic and shadows.
The Alienist
Try Sabriel by Garth Nix ? Uprooted by Naomi Novik was one I loved. The Bear and the Nightingale is beautiful. Trudi Canavan the Magicians guild I fell hard for x
Thanks you. Will add them to be TBI list (To Be Investigated). 🙂
Inkspell. The trilogy is a little magic, a little Italy, books about a book and the worlds the create.
I also like Naomi Novik Temeraire series. Yes, it’s about dragons, but not in the orc/Tolkien manner. The author reimagines the Napoleonic Wars to include dragons. So, it’s an historical fiction world, with a special creature added in.
And for Victoriana, you MUST read The Crimson Petal and the White!!!!
I have, many years ago – I loved it!
Ok, then try Slattern or The v Wonder by Emma Donoghue!
Thank you!
Do you mean Slammerkin?
@Cara damn, Slammerkin,, yes. Don’t post before coffee!
Children of blood and bone. I have discovered my fantasy style is worlds where there used to be magic but isn’t anymore. Or bits of it.
But I got sucked in so hard to this I was gasping on the bus and freaking people out. ?
Sounds intriguing!
I’m not a common fantasy reader. It seems like we have similar tastes and man did I love it.
The author describes it as “black panther with magic”
Thank you!
I’ve been meaning to add this to my TBR!
I loved this book!
Shades of Magic by V.E. @Schwab
I second this!
Yes this ☝?. I love this whole series.
Thank you for all the good suggestions. 🙂
The gentleman bastard sequence, by Scott Lynch; the Great (Alexandria) Library series, by Rachel Caine. Also recommend the mentioned Shades of Magic series by V. Schwabb
