A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. I remember reading them at that age and absolutely loved it. I also learned a lot of things in them, explained in a fun way by the narrator.

My almost-10-year-old likes a lot of the books mentioned here, as well as the Land of Stories by Colfer, the Dragonbreath series by Ursula Vernon, and the My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish Books by Mo O’Hara. If you’re willing to buy graphic novels, the AMULET series by Kibuishi was a sensation at our house.
