The Shining and Salem’s Lot are both excellent. You might like The Dark Tower series but you also might not, very hit or miss.

My favorites are Gerald’s Game and Misery because, to me, they were the scariest. I’m not easy to creep out, but those two got to me.

@Tina Misery scared me a lot, too. I still haven’t seen the movie. That one and The Shining were the scariest to me.

I used to read Stephen King all the time with my son. I started reading It when my son left it laying on the end table and had to quit. I did read Geralds Game and stopped after that one scared the bejeebers out of me.

Recommend reading his early works leading to The Stand. You begin to understand who he is as a writer. The Stand is his best. The Green Mile nd 11/22/63 are must to reads.

I’ve finished the first two books of the Dark Tower series. First one, good. Second one, better. Also recently finished The Outsider, and am working on the Green Mile. All good. All recommended.

I like his early works the best. The Stand, Carrie and The Shining are probably my favorites. I read The Shining when I was 13 and it still scares me (still haven’t seen the movie). The movie version of Carrie is still one of the scariest things I’ve ever watched.

I used to read a lot of Stephen King when I was younger. The last King book I read was Gerald’s Game and I had to stop. The movie does not do it justice. It is terrifying.

I have read only one of his and it was only because it was a Christmas gift from one of my sons: “THE GREEN MILE”! I found it very well written and the movie did it justice!

i liked what Stephen King did with the character of Percy in the book and the parallels with the orderly when he is in the nursing home. Other than that I agree that the movie did a great job. Maybe why books are better ?

Yes! I “SEE” the action in my imagination while reading, anyway. When viewing a movie made from the book, it can be the interpretation of the director. Even IF the author is there, on the set…

The Shining is very scary. I read it at age 13 and have never been able to watch the movie as a result. I read The Stand as an adult and did not have the same reaction.

I’m not sure whether The Shining is really the more frightening of the two, or if it was the just difference in my age when I read them (13 vs. 30 something).
