I’m on the Dragon Bone chair and I feel like it’s shaping up to be a memorable series. I just finished the chapter where Simon watched the ritual and the sword in the box. Best chapter so far.
@Dave RR Martin released a statement last week saying he will be doing a 2 book series called “the story of blood and fire” (i think that’s the name) which is the Targaryen backstory…….book 1 will be out before Christmas this year. Then “winds of winter” late next year, book 2 of blood and fire and then the final book of ASOFAI songs of spring I think it’s called. I know that’s not what you want to here but at least he’s back writing
Dark tower series was pretty epic. It’s not for everyone and more often then not you should probably start with book 2 since book 1 is completely different style. And it’s not a series that stays in any one genre except fantasy. But I have still loved it from 1986 until I finished in 2016
I know but the second book is so much different. I want them to read the first book, just not judge the entire series by it if they don’t feel hooked. I don’t know how else to get people to do that
Have you read the new book..The wind through the keyhole? Its a part of the series that came out as a stand alone novel but if you’ve read the series it would go in between book 3-4.. Its story within a story within a story…only Steven king could pull that off
Ok so I’m curious about this one. What is it about? What makes it so good? I have read a lot of Wies and Hickmans Dragonlance stuff and love it but everyone says this is superior but can’t tell me why.
I just found the world so interesting. Different from your typical fantasy setting. The little background stuff you find out along the way is really cool, and I personally loved all the books in the series. Couldn’t wait for the next one to come out, as I pretty much read them as they came out.
i really like uprooted by Naomi novik for a stand alone fantasy. Sabriel by Garth nix for a series. I haven’t read that much fantasy though, I’m sure I’ll discover better ones.
I really liked Way of the Kings when it came out but not read the other books. I want to but I would probably need a recap to remind me lol. What a great name for boy.
This may sound very silly and standard but I have to go with Lord of the Rings. To me it was the most influential and Tolkiens world has so much potential and imagination. He set the standard. After that the first Dragonlance Trilogy, and The first six books in the darkelf Drizzt.
So many to choose from… I love Clive Barker’s Books of Abarat, they are spectacular.. I’ve said it before all of his work is genius.. The demon cycle series by Peter. V. Brett I love Fiona McIntosh.. All of her fantasy works are terrific, loved the Trinity series. And I’m looking forward to the quickening series.. The Talisman by Steven King..and also the Dark Tower series which is set in the same world.. Brilliant The Fifth Sorceress by Robert Newcomb, I’ve yet to read the other books in the series but this was so colourful and magical I loved it.. There are so many more I can’t think of them all.. Joe Abercrombie as someone else has said is a good author, and also Robin Hobb.. I loved the Assassin’s apprentice… I’ll stop now
Also If it hasn’t been mentioned the 1st law trilogy by Joe abercrombie I’ve just found out there are 2 more set after the trilogy so will be in the hunt for them!
Seriously, the very best fantasy series I have ever read – EVER – is the “Jovai” series by B. Muze. She finally gave me permission to publish it. I’ve got the first book out already: _The Shaman’s Apprentice_. I am trying to figure out how to market it. We are working on getting out the second book in the series. _The Shaman’s Apprentice_ can stand alone, except you are craving more because she is so outstanding. https://www.amazon.com/Shamans-Apprentice-Jovai-Book-ebook/dp/B078QVJLQR
Riyria Revelations by Sullivan
Memory, Sorrow & Thorn by Williams

I have to say wheel of time, ONLY because it’s the only one I’ve finished of my favorites. I’ll let you know later about SA, ASOIAF, KKC etc
I don’t think we should hold our breathe waiting for your review of those last two. ?.
I really don’t think they’re ever coming.

Do you have a link for that?
@Dave no, I read it somewhere but can’t remember where. I’m sure if you do a search you’ll find it
I had a feeling hbo wouldn’t want him to release winds of winter until after season 8 is finished.
Anything by Joe Abercrombie.
The Demon Cycle by Peter V Brett. Tough to say anything is better than either of those.
I love the Demon cycle books!! I’m reading them now have just started book 4..

I think the first book being different is important since it lets you see how much Roland changes
Looking for a new series, what’s the author’s name of this Dark tower series?
I can’t remember. It’s some nobody.
@Maryam Stephen King
Loved that series so much.. And I really enjoyed book one..if you start anywhere else you won’t know about Jake
Have you read the new book..The wind through the keyhole? Its a part of the series that came out as a stand alone novel but if you’ve read the series it would go in between book 3-4.. Its story within a story within a story…only Steven king could pull that off
It came out a few years ago after the series was complete but if you haven’t read the series I would read that as a part of it
No. I won’t! I won’t do it! I won’t pick just one!
Kingkiller Chronicles
The Demon Cycle
Mistborn
Icewind Dale
Dragonlance Legends
The Death’s Gate Cycle
Brandon Sanderson is my all time favourite author but to pick one series ❓❓❓
Wheel of Time hands down
The Morgaine Saga by CJ Cherryh. Original ideas, thrilling pace, unforgettable characters and effortless worldbuilding. Gorgeous language, too.
https://www.amazon.com/Morgaine-Saga-Daw-Book-Collectors/dp/0886778778/
Rift war saga.
My top two are terry pratchetts discworld and Robin Hobbs Farseer series
The First Law series is incredible. I even enjoyed the “stand-alones” after the main trilogy even more
American Gods. Modern Fantasy, I guess.
The Dark Tower by Stephen King
Wheel of Time
Death Gate Cycle.
Ok so I’m curious about this one. What is it about? What makes it so good? I have read a lot of Wies and Hickmans Dragonlance stuff and love it but everyone says this is superior but can’t tell me why.

Interesting. I may have to give them a try then. I always loved the name and covers.
We have this thread every day
The Name of the Wind.
Ugh.
Stormlight archives
Dresden files
i really like uprooted by Naomi novik for a stand alone fantasy. Sabriel by Garth nix for a series. I haven’t read that much fantasy though, I’m sure I’ll discover better ones.
The Stormlight Archives. So much so that I named my youngest son Kaladin. but really, a close second is The Wheel of Time. I’m a huge Jordan fangirl.
I really liked Way of the Kings when it came out but not read the other books. I want to but I would probably need a recap to remind me lol. What a great name for boy.
Thank you so much everyone..googling..???
Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
All of Robin Hobb starting with Assassin’s Apprentice:
Love Hobb!!
Agreed.

It must have become uncool to say LOTR after the films, or something, because that’s got to be the answer for most people, *surely*
I read it when I was ten far before the movies
Same.
@Alastair – definitely my answer. First read in well over 50 years ago, so a wee bit before the films appeared.

I love Terry Prachett. Discworld
Robin Hobbs-All especially Fitz and the Fool
If I finish a book I loved it so for me there’s to many to list
It’s hard to choose one “best” book. But Tigana (Guy Gavriel Kaye) has to be way up on there on the top of my list.
Rothfuss
Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. ❤❤
Wheel of Time honestly. But I’ll also throw in everything by Jeff Wheeler – Muirwood, Kingfountain, etc.
The malazan book of the fallen is epic and of course song of fire and ice
And the dark tower by Stephen King is worth al look
Also If it hasn’t been mentioned the 1st law trilogy by Joe abercrombie I’ve just found out there are 2 more set after the trilogy so will be in the hunt for them!
Powder Mage series. It’s like Game of Thrones but the heroes get their powers from gunpowder

A Song of Ice and Fire – hope it finishes well
The Dark Tower
