Definitely the longer the better as long as the quality remains. Yours get better if that’s possible.

With my reader hat on I am always thrilled at the prospect of a series and make a point of buying my favourite authors’ blacklists too…

I just can’t wait to see what the characters do next. But as Carole says the quality must remain. Yes, yours do get better every time.

I really enjoy a series if the characters are well drawn and grow as the series progress. If I really like the team it feels like coming back to a loved family . How weird is that? but thats how it is for me

I feel absolutely the same. Especially when you’re not very happy and want to forget. Very comforting…

I remember as a teenager I got addicted to a series of all things westerns. One in particular was called EDGE and I am pretty sure the author did over 100 in the series and almost every one came in between 120 and 140 pages long.

I love a series but I have given up on some such as James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell, but have since discovered some brilliant UK author’s series.

What made you give up, Susan?

1
Susan

@Robin The Scarpetta series became too much of the same and far fetched and too technical for me. The Alex Cross series and The Ladies Murder Club series also became much of the same. The Alex Cross series began to annoy me when he would leave his children with his Nanna Mama and enter into the most dangerous situations. (Petty excuse, I know) The Ladies Murder Club also became much of the same. The Jack Reacher series I gave up on too. In my opinion, I felt there was no longer a surprise element in the books, they had all became quite boring, plus I had discovered new authors.

Anne

@Susan me too .

1
Susan

@Anne pleased it’s not just me! Did you get bored wth them or another reason?

0
Carole

Patricia Cornwell’s books were brilliant for many years but now they are dire.

1
Susan

@Carole I agree the early books in the series I mentioned were brilliant, gripping reads.

1
Anne

@Susan became tired of the same formula of family over and over, also found reacher and many other “hero’s” were starting to sound like a rotation of the same story.

Shirley

Yes longer the better ….it’s like an addiction you look forward to your next ‘fix ‘. I was upset when
TR Ragans Lizzy Gardener books finished especially as it was a surprising and sad ending !

It depends when I see it. If it is 10 plus probably won’t as too much to catch up and it seems daunting. If I am with a series from the beginning then it’s brilliant

I think it was the first 10 Lasser that I read one after the other – not put off, just remember being desperate for more. Depends on the stories really

I have all the Downton Abbey TV box sets but am out off by the sheer length. I left Pillars of the Earth on one side for two years before I read it due to its length but as soon as I started it I couldn’t put it down.

Can’t get enough actually. ?

I prefer shorter series, I tend to lose track and get behind. 3 or 4 in a series suit me fine!!

I like long series but not long books lol 🙂

I agree with that. Some are just padded out and my editor’s pen itches to take action 😉

I read 32 of Inspector George Gently by Alan Hunter. Fair to say I don’t mind a series lol ?

If the main characters are set well and there is if you like a “sort of something” that works between them then I would say keep em coming

I love long books too as long as there is no padding in them. Wonderful series like these are Game of Thrones- GRR Martin, the Otherland Series – Tad Williams, Pillars of The Earth Series – Ken Follett.

I thought the books 5 till about 10 were not as good as the early ones but he is now back on track.

I did enjoy the early ones…..May try again when I have no books awaiting.

@Kathleen I’ve only read a couple but he’s not to my taste. I find him a bit of a cold fish.

Some series definitely go on for too long. @Susan, I got bored with The Scarpetta series too. I’m sure my fans would tell me if they get fed up of the Justice series, I’m halfway through writing the 16th book now. I think it’s also important to write them as standalone novels too.

Scarpetta, I think ,just lost the plot and then Lucy and her helicopter just a bit over the top. I’m sure your fans would tell you Mel. I think you have a long way to go before then!

1
Mel

@Susan, I think you’re right about Scarpetta. Fingers crossed about the Justice series. ?

0
Greta

I was tired of hearing about Scarpetta’s kitchen. 🙂

2
Susan

Ok think there was actually a cook book released

3
Craig

@Susan I’ve got the cook book, only thing we’ve ever made out of it is Jack Daniels chocolate chip pecan pie

1
Susan

That sounds lovely.

1
Craig

it is but costs a fortune to make so I don’t make it very often

1
Susan

Seems a waste to put Jack Daniels in a ?
