Are there any stand-alone fantasy novels? One that isn’t part of a series? If so, please tell me what they are.

Are these by the same author?

David

Well strictly speaking the first two are Cosmere books so they are a series in their own unique way. Empress Soul is a Novella, and an excellent one at that.

First three are by Brandon Sanderson

He hasn’t tied any cosmeres together yet, definitely doesn’t make them series in any way. Absolutely fantastic reads! Read all of his

Treason by Orson Scott Card is one of the best stand alone novels I know. Also, Elantris and Warbreaker are part of a series, just not finished. But they do read well by themselves for sure.

Treason is fantastic! All Card’s books are!

If you like middle grade:
• The Wizard in the Tree by Lloyd Alexander (he has quite a few standalones and I like him a lot)
• The Witches by Roald Dahl (also has lots of standalones)
• Which Witch? by Eva Ibbotson (funny and unique)
• Kenny and the Dragon by Tony DiTerlizzi (one of the minds behind The Spiderwick Chronicles)

If you want something more mature:
• Stardust, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neverwhere, The Sandman, Good Omens (co-authored with Terry Pratchett) by Neil Gaiman
• White Sand (the unpublished original version, not the graphic novel) by Brandon Sanderson (you can request it from him via email)
• Aether of Night by Brandon Sanderson (another unpublished manuscript you can ask him to send you)
• The Once and Future King by T.H. White (Arthurian legend, it’s kind of a standalone)

For something in between:
• Heroes of the Valley by Jonathan Stroud (I haven’t read this one but I loved his Bartimaeus Sequence)
• The Neverending Story by Michael Ende
• A Walk Out of the World by Ruth Nichols (I haven’t read this one either but I’m looking at it on my shelf so I thought I’d mention it. P.S. good luck finding a copy)
• The Last Unicorn (I believe Patrick Rothfuss described this as “the perfect book”
• The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker (I’ve heard good things)

Was going to suggest Uprooted as well. The Last Unicorn by Peter S beagle and Joe Abercrombie has a stand alone called Heroes. If you haven’t read his First Law series then you’re missing out.

I wouldn’t read heroes unless you’ve read the first law trilogy first… But I would read the trilogy for sure and then read heroes 🙂

Yes @Kate I’m a big fan of McKinley. If you like spins on classic fairy tale stories you’d like her. My favorite book she’s written is Beauty. It’s a retelling of beauty and the beast. Deerskin is also really good (though darker).

Jamie

I love her re tellings also. The Hero and the Crown and The Blue sword, Dragonhaven and Pegasus. I can’t wait for her to release a new book!

Wonderful did you get to his other works? I loved Ocean at the end of the Lane. Good omens. The Graveyard book. The Ansai boys. They are all lovely.

I’ve read most of Gaiman’s stuff. Ocean at the End of the Lane was my favorite.

I loved that one also. I didn’t even mention the book that me got me started Stardust!!

I actually just thought of one. If you haven’t read it, please do. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. It’s a masterpiece.

It is good. It kinda starts out slow but if you keep at it the second part of the book is wonderful.

You guys are the best. Thank you. I’m in the wonderful stage of “what should I read next?” One of my favorites places to be. The whole world is open to me. Which leads to another question…. (Starting a new thread).

I’m starting the new book by NK Jemisin, The Fifth Season. It won many awards already.

Aww that “what should I read next?” stage has been stolen from me by my bloated TBR. Sometimes I wonder if I should just throw it out and see what book I happen to find next after reading my current one. Sometimes I plan ahead the books I’ll read a little too much and it kinda takes away some of the fun

The Darkest Part of the Forest, The Book of Mordred, Every Other Day, Dragonheart, going to throw Warbreaker out there again because its awesome.

You made it sound very cool, so I put it on my TBR… in English and, someday, the original German.
