I like Biographies (and Biographical Novels) for history. Irving Stone wrote some beauties.

I Recommend author Herman Wouk, do you like big books? These 2, Winds of War and War and Rememberance – Historical fiction at it’s finest as I believe it to be when you cannot distinguish fact from fiction. I love authors that can do that seamlessly. The high stakes of World War II are the center of these stories and families. Lots of drama, heroism, love, death and more in the 885 pages of Book 1. Then almost 3 more weeks to finish this epic conclusion of Book 2.What a wonderful strong fictional family chosen by this author to represent the horrors of World War 2. If you are an avid reader, please take the time to read these 2 books and thanks to those who encouraged me to read them back to back. I read these 2 books with almost 2000 pages in 5 weeks, that is just how good these books were.

If you are looking for historical novels, as opposed to nonfiction books about history, I would recommend the novels of James Fenimore Cooper for the early colonial/pre Revolutionary War period, as well as some of the short stories/novellas of Nathaniel Hawthorne. For the Civil War and history of slavery, try The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, as well as actual slave narratives, such as 12 Years A Slave (Solomon Northup), The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, and other first hand accounts of slavery written or dictated by escaped/freed slaves (there is a list on Wikipedia).

For World War I, try Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo.

I also like The Grapes of Wrath (John Steinbeck) for its description of the life of migrant workers and other economic refugees during the Great Depression.

The Leatherstocking Tales is a series of five novels by James Fenimore Cooper, set in the eighteenth century era of development in the primarily former Iroquois areas in central New York. Each novel features Natty Bumppo, a frontiersman known to European-American settlers as “Leatherstocking”, “The Pathfinder”, and “the trapper”. Native Americans call him “Deerslayer”, “La Longue Carabine”, and “Hawkeye”. For the civil war try “Cold Mountain” by Charles Frazier and Michael Shaara’s “The Killer Angels”.
