I love his books because his writings are very raw and deep. This book hits home and it never fails to make me sentimenal about things. This is highly recommended.
I read it more than 15 years ago, before he was as well known in the US. It seemed I enjoyed them all, found him to have quite a unique voice. And from there I moved on to The Wind-up Bird Chronicles.
Wow. I also have the wind-up chronicle. Read a few pages. and got me have an interest in it. I just don’t have much time to have my whole attention becausw of school works, but I want to find a me-time with this book.
I started with Kafka on the Shore, and that one hooked me and made me want to read all of his books I could get my hands on, so check that out. Also, don’t miss The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. I love them all, but those two are my favorites. Everyone loves Norwegian Wood, but I thought it was a bit overrated–not signature Murakami bizarre like the others, which was disappointing.
My first book of Murakami is Norwegian Wood. Second is Kafka on the Shore. Same feels when I shifted to Kafka on the Shore. Both are good books but different writing style. Any thoughts on Hard-boiled Wonderland and the end of the world? I have one but haven’t had the interest to read. I also have wind-up chronicle and read few chapters in it.
@Pat–I really liked Hard-Boiled Wonderland, even though it is science fiction, which is not my thing. The humor and surreal beauty are the things that one has going for it.
I’m no help. Never read him
South of the Border West of the Sun!!
I haven’t bought a copy of this. But this is on my list.

If I have the one you mean right, The Elephant Vanishes.
It’s his short stories collection. A nice way into the author’s work. Small bites.
I have this on my shelf. Is it much better than the other books that has short stories? which is the best short story you got hooked on to?

I have also read others, most of them in fact, so if you have questions about any particular one, I might be able to answer them.
Norwegian Wood is a great place to start as well.
The Wind Up Bird Chronicles!
Think I read Wild Sheep Chase for a magicial realism class?
Yes! “Norwegian Wood”
Try T.C. Boyles, please. His writing is riveting. Anything he writes is good.
1s84? Not sure I’m getting the title right but I loved it
1Q84 was wonderful! I agree.
I knew I had it wrong. Thanks! ?
I read Colorless Tsukuru Tasaki by Murakami. I rarely rate a book 5 Stars. This was a 5 star read. I recommend it highly.
1Q84 or Kafka on the Shore – those are my two favorites of his.
