I’m 28 and sometimes read children’s books… Where’s the problem? ?

GabrielaQuestion author

Idk I guess since I’ve been told I’m a grown up and it looks weird to read or watch things targeted for kids. Someone said it to me before and it kind stuck to me.

Angela

@Gabriela, I’ve learnt over the years to ignore people who tell me I’m too old. Read the books you want and enjoy yourself. Life is too short to worry about people who have forgotten how to enjoy themselves.

2
Angela

i also go by the mantra ‘growing old maybe mandatory, but growing up is optional’

3
Alessia

@Gabriela assholes. You can read and watch wathever makes you happy 🙂 I prefer 20 million times to read a good book for children that some shite written only for adults. Just follows what makes you happy 😉 I read both adults books (with lots of sex in them) and children’s book. Love them

Read it, especially if you want to. Enjoy yourself. I’d be more concerned with a young child reading some crazy mature adult book, not an adult reading a kid’s book. Do we ever really grow up inside?

Oh heck, if I only read stories in my age group I’d be reading my grandmother’s Agatha Christie mysteries. The middle grade stories are great for traveling – light and easy to read. If you are embarrassed about people checking out the book slip one of the stretchy book covers on it.

Read what you want, who cares about target audience! The only thing you have to be aware of is if you write reviews, keep target audience in mind. A big pet peeve I see from authors is adults saying things like “this teen made dumb decisions” about YA books where teens just act like teens lol

But i mean i read middle grade, chapter books, ya, i even love a few children’s books (“I’d Really Like To Eat A Child” is adorable). Read what makes you happy!

I’m not the biggest MG fan. I WAAAY prefer adult but some are okay. Like This Savage Song by VE Schwab was great!

2
Reply
Hannah

I just feel that MG is limited. They can’t delve into all the places that adult or even YA can because of the age limit.

Im an adult and pretty much live for The Magic Tree House and The Magic School Bus ?

2

I can remember both! I wasn’t really a fan of The Magic School Bus. I liked the theme song more than the actual cartoon. I loved The Magic Tree House, though!

it’s just so fun! Sometimes adult books are just so heavy with their themes and language. I retreat to ya and kids’ books every now and then for a break

Just because a book is written with a target audience/mc doesn’t mean there’s a restriction on who can read it. Books are for everyone.

Also, City of Ghosts looks promising!

Never be stopped to read a book, just because it wasn’t “meant for you”. Nobody knows what’s meant for you. Maybe you’re not part of the group the book was written for, but who cares? It’s not the author that picks the reader, it’s always the book. ??

I think as an adult I’ve only read one middle grade book that I actually enjoyed because romance is usually a must for me no matter the genre but I really enjoyed Blackbringer by Laini Taylor

Yes! I’m in my thirties, and I read middle grade books. Rick Riordan is an auto buy author for me.

I’m a big V. E. Schwab fan, so I want to read City of Ghosts too. The only bad(?) thing I’ve heard about it is that there will be a sequel, and people who’ve read it want to know what happens next.

@Rianna oh my goodness, you’re in for a treat! The Fairyland series is still totally relatable as a grown up too. Cat Valente has a knack for seeing into your soul and writing it down on the page in the most beautiful, surreal, heartbreakingly accurate way. ?

Dont let anyone tell you that your age dictates what you can and cannot read. That has got to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard

I was in a funk last week and my 14yo hands me the book paper towns. She rented it from the school library. I couldn’t read it cuz i had to leave town. My 12yo gave me a book called the red pyramid. She was reading percy jackson while waiting for our turn at the parent teacher conference. I got to chapter 4. I’m still waiting for her to bring it home so i can finish reading it. Lol

I’m 16 and I’m currently 164 pages into city of ghosts, it definitely feels like more of a children’s book then what I’m used to but I’m still really enjoying it and it’s a very quick read ?

I still read middle-grade (and I’m in my 20s). For me there’s a bit of nostalgia since I started reading in 4th grade and mostly read middle-grade books at for a while. I still enjoy reading them, though lately I’ve noticed there aren’t nearly as many MG books as there for other age groups. (Plus, I feel if it’s okay for adults for write them ((and clearly the author and any editors must read them)) then it’s just fine for adult readers to read and enjoy them as well ?)
