Chicken Soup for the teenage Soul has a lot of books for teens about everything from challenges, to mental illnesses to friends and families. My mom bought some for me when I was younger and they helped a lot!

I loved the book at first but I later learned that it depicts mental illness in a highly inaccurate way. I think the book is an entertaining read if you’re not looking for anything serious… but it’s a bad representation of mental illness

Cosette

I don’t know how to respond to this….. guess I’m going to have to do some research…….

Sadia

Check out the first review on the goodreads page for this book… it’s by a psychology student I believe… that’s what really got me thinking and then I did my own research on it as well…

Cosette

@Sadia wow so that was crazy. I can’t believe how screwed up it is! I wish someone had told me sooner- I’ve been recommending this book way too much. Not gonna make that recommendation again. This is no one but the authors fault though, really.

1
Sadia

@Cosette exactly!! I was just as surprised because of how much I enjoyed the book! Then again… it was simply too good to be true. It’s an entertaining read if you don’t take anything seriously, but this is seriously a bad representation of mental illness. I loved the writing style and the plot was very entertaining… but I don’t think I’d want to read another book by the same author, and that’s really a shame…

That’s disappointing…I just ordered it ? I enjoyed Eliza and her monsters by Francesca Zappia

– It’s Kind of Funny Story by Ned Vizzini (Trigger Warning: this book deals with self-harm, addiction, anxiety, and suicide. The details about these topics can be difficult for some readers.)
– The Problem with Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout
– Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry
– The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia
– Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
– Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Not all of these books mention a specific mental illness but they do have characters who deal with mental health.
