You can use library with kindle.
Kobo is more expensive and doesn’t have as many books. Amazon is by far superior and their customer service is the best I’ve ever come across.

Amazon customer service in my opinion needs a lot of work.

I totally disagree. They are excellent and I use amazon at least twice a week sometimes more. I’ve never ever had a problem. They aim to resolve stuff immediately

They do not listen to customer feedback though. Take the ads on kindle devices. You pay £109 for a paperwhite and £59 for normal. And the fill them full of ads. And then expect you to a further £10 to have them emoved. I rang up and complained about this as the ads are totally irreverent. They did remove them free of charge because of this. But customers should not have to be bombarded with offers that is not necessary.

@Sarah but they removed them for you? And some people like myself and my husband like seeing the ads? I have them on one and not the other?

And the price is reflective. One is back lit and therefore more expensive to produce. My voyage was much more expensive and worth it as I loved it! But I’m back on my paperwhite now and again love that

Maybe but if you do not then you should not be expected to pay to get them removed.

But you are aware they are there when you buy it? It’s very clear in the description etc and the advertisements keep the cost of the device lower hence the price difference on ones with it and without?

That never has made sense. They have only just starting doing the past couple of years. A girl in work got a paperwhite off her daughter for mothers day about 2 years ago she has no ads and the price was the same then.

Louise

It doesn’t bother me and you have the option to take them off so I don’t see the issue myself.

And I like seeing ads! I miss them on my paperwhite as I’ve read some excellent reads recommended

@Sarah I agree with you re the ads. You shouldn’t have to pay to stop them. It is Amazon’s choice to put them there, not yours. They make enough money on products and advertising with those who are happy with the adverts, and given they don’t pay their proper share of corporate tax and pay minimum wage with mostly zero hours contracts, they aren’t short of a bob or two.

It’s quite simple really – you get a cheaper device and see adverts or you pay a bit more and don’t see adverts. The advertisement revenue subsidises the cheaper prices. If you buy a cheaper device that’s has a price subsidised by adverts why on earth would you feel entitled to moan about it? You could have got a device without the adverts if that’s what you wanted. I think Amazon were rather nice to take the averts off for you… and you’re still moaning. Crumbs.

Or, buy a device that doesn’t swell the coffers of the likes of amazon. Or, buy books so that authors and publishers get full royalties not the discount royalties due to the likes of amazon ‘cornering’ the market.

@DeeDee my friend gets more from a download than a real book. Mad!

The only time I have ever heard people moaning about amazon is when they didn’t get the responses they wanted ? or they were in the wrong. Human error as well.
I know someone here moaned because they were sent a reconditioned kindle and then didn’t follow through etc. How on earth are they supposed to put something right without a conversation? And if someone is rude etc, then the likelihood is, it won’t get you anywhere. I know an amazon customer service manager and their mantra is all about keeping the customer happy. I think the fact they have billions of customers and the consensus is their customer service is the best in the world tells you something.

So now you know. It would appear best not to criticise amazon on this page.

I think everyone has had different experiences. I love them and have been so pleased with their service.

@Louise that is true. However, amazon is a big ’employer’ in this area, and I have known several people who have struggled to find work, got taken on by amazon on minimum wage zero hours contract with the promise of permanent work on a higher rate after 12 weeks if they ‘fit in’. Those guys worked every shift they were given, going in early, staying late if they were needed, worked whatever they were given to do, believing that, if they demonstrated how good they were, the permanent contract would be given. Nope, 11 weeks in, new people were coming in with the same promises and my friends and friends husbands were ‘let go’ as they were ” no longer needed “. Amazon does this to ensure that they don’t have to contribute to pensions, and can turnover staff to suit themselves in this desperate ‘gig economy’. The majority of their staff (warehouse particularly) have no permanent contracts, no pensions as a result of that, no security and even less hope of ever having those things. And Amazon in the meantime hide all their money in off-shore companies/banks, tax avoidance schemes. I binned my kindle. Wouldn’t even sell it or gift it to anyone because I won’t prop up such an unethical company. Buy cheap and someone, somewhere will pay dear. So I have nothing good to say about amazon. I’d rather pay a bit more knowing that the person at the till has a proper job and some level of security, than save myself a quid or two and then not sleep at night.

Funny isn’t it as I know people who work there and they love it.
And I’m afraid I don’t have the luxury of a few extra quid. So I shop where it suits us xx

Sarah Mains, when Ereaders first came out, like you, my husband didn’t like Amazon/Kindle and we both bought Sony Ereaders , it was quite a complicated procedure to download books (think we did it via W H Smith) but then when they brought Kobo out we couldn’t download via them. We have since bought the Kindle paperwhite which is backlit and can be read in sunshine (Sony wasn’t backlit and useless in the sun.). Was an expensive lesson.

I’m 110% amazon through and through lol. Plus I like the kindle ads, have discovered and read some amazing books that way! I have prime so I can use prime reading as well, and the kindle owners lending library.
