I did. It was a perfect fall read, you really felt the chill in the air, crispness. As I recall there was an adaptation years ago on HBO with Paul Newman that was wonderful.
Oh my. What an excellent book. A little like John Irving. Moves along slowly, developing characters, putting you into small town life… and then punches you in the gut.
OMG Richard Russo is one of my favorite authors- read all his books and his ‘memoir.’ They actually made a pretty good representation of the book too. I think it was a miniseries on HBO??? Paul Newman was in another one of his books made into a movie.
@Jurate ok I understand. I don’t care for mysteries at all and couldn’t finish 100 years of solitude or confederacy of dunes and a lot of folks just loved both. I’m rereading some books now and also just finished Clock dance by Anne Tyler and the Beartown sequel. Both were awesome imo. Im up to 153 books read this year.
@Fancy Yes, I enjoyed that also. I still have Mohawk and Bridge of Sighs on my reading list but I’ve read his other novels. Richard Russo has become one of my favorite authors.
I’ve started it three times but just couldn’t get in to it. Your comments have encouraged me to try again. Does it pick up after the first chapter? It seems to start off slow.
I found it slow, but sometimes slow is good. A lot of character development, not a lot of action. But when things do happen, you care, because you are attached to the characters.
@Linda I do prefer my books to have a solid plot, but occasionally can get into a more character driven novel. John Irving is one of my favorites and his books are also more character studies. I just need to get them at the right time.
Loved this book. Richard Russo is a favorite of mine.
Me too, all his books are great.
Just tried it and couldn’t get into it.

I thought it was ok. Have read much better
Oh my- what kind of books do you like? I love quirky characters- hence Russo is my man.
Have to agree! Felt it became too contrived . Actually,I like Richard Russo and his “quirky characters”
I do like Russo but just not a fan of Empire Falls . I felt it was contrived and frankly could not keep my interest.
@Jurate Agree!
@Jurate interesting. Guess I don’t know what you
mean by contrived? I found it pretty humorous.
@Nancy I felt the some of the plot and characters issues were forced and I lost interest pretty quickly .
@Nancy I think Confederacy of the Dunces was the worst book and would never recommend to to anyone
I didn’t like Confederacy of Duncea either.
Yes. I’ll echo others and say you should check out all of Russo’s books.

Richard Russo is wonderful. Empire Falls is one of his best.
Loved that book!
I’ve started it three times but just couldn’t get in to it. Your comments have encouraged me to try again. Does it pick up after the first chapter? It seems to start off slow.
Yes. It picks up and takes you thru their pasts and current lives and pasts tell a good story.
I found it slow, but sometimes slow is good. A lot of character development, not a lot of action. But when things do happen, you care, because you are attached to the characters.
@Heather That was my problem with it..after a few chapters I was begging out loud for a plot! Gave up.
I may have a snobbish attention span?
@Linda I do prefer my books to have a solid plot, but occasionally can get into a more character driven novel. John Irving is one of my favorites and his books are also more character studies. I just need to get them at the right time.
Loved it. Was a read for our book club. Very good discussion was had.
Yes and enjoyed it
Was great
Great book!
Yes, I enjoyed it. The movie wasn’t bad either, nothing is with Paul Newman.
Are you thinking of Nobody’s Fool?
