Anyone ever read Empire Falls?
Loved this book. Richard Russo is a favorite of mine.
Me too, all his books are great.
Just tried it and couldn’t get into it.
Great book, like all of Russo’s books!
It was a great book.
It was good. I’d like to read more of his books.
I would recommend Bridge of Sighs next.
Yes, Bridge of Sighs is a teriffic book!
No but it’s on my books to read list.
Loved that book!
I have a copy that I am now motivated to read
Love Richard Russo’s books.
All his books are good.
Yes. Loved it.
I enjoyed all of Russo’s books – bridge of sighs, straight man….
It was ok
Fantastic book… I could not put it down
Really enjoyed it!
Love all his stories. Upstate NY settings in some of them.
Yes & I very highly recommend anything by Richard Russo ???
Richard Russo is a favorite author. I read anything he publishes as soon as I find out about it. I do the same with Chris Bohjalian’s work.
I love Bohjalian but just couldn’t get into his last book.
Yes. I liked it.
Yes, very much recommended. He creates a world you live in, with characters you feel like you know.
I loved this book. His depiction of small towns is spot on.
I saw Richard Russo and Stephen King at a book talk, focused on writing about small towns. It was amazing.
Yes, highly recommend!
Yes, loved it.
Yes! Great book
Love his books
Yes! It has been a number of years but The way I remember it seems that it would be just as relevant today as then.
I did. It was a perfect fall read, you really felt the chill in the air, crispness. As I recall there was an adaptation years ago on HBO with Paul Newman that was wonderful.
It was an excellent adaptation!
All of Russo’s novels are excellent!
Oh my. What an excellent book. A little like John Irving. Moves along slowly, developing characters, putting you into small town life… and then punches you in the gut.
Yes. Agree with Mari.
loved it- one of my shelf of favorite books.
Loved it. Have read all Richard Russo’s books
Yes it was my pick for my book club and everyone enjoyed it. It’s a good story, well written.
Loved it. Read it after watching the movie.
Yes. A good read.
Just starting it!
Love all his bks
Yes loved all his books
They made a movie out of that many years ago with Paul Newman as the star. Really good movie too
Yes. I really liked Empire Falls.
I did. It’s a good read. It’s Been done as series too
Love all his books
OMG Richard Russo is one of my favorite authors- read all his books and his ‘memoir.’ They actually made a pretty good representation of the book too. I think it was a miniseries on HBO??? Paul Newman was in another one of his books made into a movie.
Paul Newman was in Nobody’s Fool. Movie and book are both very good. Love Richard Russo books.
Yes! It’s the first book of his that I read and have loved everything he’s written
I thought it was ok. Have read much better
Oh my- what kind of books do you like? I love quirky characters- hence Russo is my man.
Have to agree! Felt it became too contrived . Actually,I like Richard Russo and his “quirky characters”
I do like Russo but just not a fan of Empire Falls . I felt it was contrived and frankly could not keep my interest.
@Jurate interesting. Guess I don’t know what you mean by contrived? I found it pretty humorous.
@Nancy I felt the some of the plot and characters issues were forced and I lost interest pretty quickly .
@Jurate ok I understand. I don’t care for mysteries at all and couldn’t finish 100 years of solitude or confederacy of dunes and a lot of folks just loved both. I’m rereading some books now and also just finished Clock dance by Anne Tyler and the Beartown sequel. Both were awesome imo. Im up to 153 books read this year.
@Nancy I think Confederacy of the Dunces was the worst book and would never recommend to to anyone
I didn’t like Confederacy of Duncea either.
Yes. I’ll echo others and say you should check out all of Russo’s books.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Yes, I’d start with Nobody’s Fool tho.
@Debbie Made a good movie,too
@Mary yes I loved that movie – great cast.
Love all of his books. Wonderful storyteller.
Loved Bridge of Sighs
I read it and I loved it. Plus it won the Pulitzer.
Really enjoyed it.
Love Richard Russo
Many years ago, but loved it!
Yes Good Read!
Loved the book and it was better than the movie even though Paul Newman was in it.
It’s a tie between Richard Russo & Reynolds Price for me!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Loved it so much I began reading all of Richard Russo’s other books. Highly recommend!
Have you read Straight Man?
@Fancy Yes, I enjoyed that also. I still have Mohawk and Bridge of Sighs on my reading list but I’ve read his other novels. Richard Russo has become one of my favorite authors.
Yes I loved it and Paul Newman played the lead in the movie
Yes, we read for book club. Good read.
Yes. I really liked it. Pulitzer winner.
I loved it!
Loved it! But I’m a big Russo fan!
Richard Russo is wonderful. Empire Falls is one of his best.
I’ve started it three times but just couldn’t get in to it. Your comments have encouraged me to try again. Does it pick up after the first chapter? It seems to start off slow.
Yes. It picks up and takes you thru their pasts and current lives and pasts tell a good story.
I found it slow, but sometimes slow is good. A lot of character development, not a lot of action. But when things do happen, you care, because you are attached to the characters.
@Heather That was my problem with it..after a few chapters I was begging out loud for a plot! Gave up. I may have a snobbish attention span?
@Linda I do prefer my books to have a solid plot, but occasionally can get into a more character driven novel. John Irving is one of my favorites and his books are also more character studies. I just need to get them at the right time.
Loved it. Was a read for our book club. Very good discussion was had.
Yes and enjoyed it
Yes, I enjoyed it. The movie wasn’t bad either, nothing is with Paul Newman.
Are you thinking of Nobody’s Fool?
I’ll have to watch if they made a movie of empire falls also!
@Ashley I am, whoops! Sorry.
No but it turns out you’re right – he is in a movie called Empire Falls too!! I want to watch it!
Yay? I don’t know if I was right or happened to turn out to be right accidentally! I will have to look it up. ??
I looked it up and I did actually see that series. Phew, I still have a few brain cells left, ha!
Yes. I like Richard Russo.
