It’s an Excellent Book, you can learn a lot from it. Slow to start but picks up speed as you start reading. It’s banned in the South, due to it’s subject matter. But like I said it’s a beautiful story and the lesson s it teaches about the human condition is awesome.

I live in the South and it isn’t banned. Only specific cities across the country have it banned in their schools. I’ve been teaching it at my high school for twelve years straight.

Incredible book and you’ll see multiple things going on: loss of innocent, good vs evil, how moral education is important, humanism, social inequality, and much more. As someone else said, it’s a tad slow in the beginning but then it picks up pretty decently.

EW. Hated it in high school, hated it even more when my son had to read it in 9th grade and we read it together. He was like, WTF? WHY are we reading this? We already know there was prejudice in Alabama back then… this is horrible. From the mouth of a15-year-old with a super-high IQ and all AP science and math classes. Be prepared to be miserable and disappointed in the human race.

It’s called analyzing a novel for specific themes. It doesn’t just discuss prejudice.

I minored in English, have read most of the classics, and I dislike TKAM immensely. I also hate Wuthering Heights. I’m allowed. I hated Titanic too. Doesn’t make me less educated or intelligent, simply means I have an opinion. In my OPINION, it’s a terrible, depressing story that highlights some of the worst parts of humanity. The amount of “truth” in the story doesn’t make it a great piece of literature. It’s a fictional account of what really happened in those days and it doesn’t help me understand or appreciate that era. I much prefer non-fiction for such powerful stories. Fictionalizing the horror or racism bothered me.

I’m saying it’s used for analysis. I have been teaching the novel, and it’s themes, for well over a decade. Many students enjoy. Some have their eyes opened during it. I’m not saying that your opinion doesn’t count; I was saying why it’s used within the school curriculum.

Let me put it this way if a book is on the “Banned Booklist” that comes out yearly, read it.
This book makes the cut every year.
Here is the best comprised list I could find (ALA only keeps the top 10)
