Best book ever. A true piece of art. I wore out my first copy in high school and college. I bought another copy as an adult and I realized that it takes on a completely different meaning and has different lessons when viewed from this perspective. I LOVE it. I would have liked to have spent a day with Harper Lee.

I think it’s okay, but I’ll never understand why it’s considered so incredible and a masterpiece. It’s highly flawed, and most of the characters are not good people (yes, including Atticus). It’s worth reading, though.

It doesn’t have anything to do with killing mocking birds. Sorry about the spoiler

4
Reply
Cindy

I know you’re joking… But it almost begs for discussing the metaphorical mockingbirds which are “killed” in the story… 😉

0
Kurio

Very true. But yes that’s your spoiler. I love seeing the comic with the cats that are upset cuz it has nothing to do with that

1
Cindy

Right right… To discuss further would be mean… You can sure tell a lot about a person though, by which “deaths” they feel most impacted by…. And here I’d like to point out, NO spoilers, the deaths may or may not be metaphorical, and could relate to any number of situations or circumstance… Those of you who want to know specifics will just have to read it yourselves!! ?

0
Kurio

It’s been a long while since I’ve read it, just always think of that comic when I see this book mentioned

It captures the feeling of a very small southern town in a very interesting way—Scout’s perspective is perfect for examining the interworkings and goings-on of the adults during that time. I really love how her curiosity and innocence is juxtaposed against the injustice and fear of the adults. It’s a great novel (the movie is also good, one of the few that compliments the book, I’d say).

Just don’t go read the sequel, Go set a Watchman it will disappoint you

0

Jessica

Honestly I beg to differ. I was confused at first while reading it because it had been a long time since I read mockingbird but I feel if you understand that it takes place YEARS later and have an open mind, it’s an enjoyable read

1
Stacey

Yeah, I can see your point. I think it’s just falling in love, if you will, and finding out they aren’t the way you thought they were. It kinda takes the wind out of your sails

Just incredible! Do NOT read the sequel, as it has her name but not written by her.

2

Actually IT WAS written by Harper Lee… and then got rejected and she wrote To Kill A Mockingbird instead. And actually… Go Set A Watchman WORKS very well, as a stand alone and as an unofficial sequel (though it’s not the sequel really) to the book.

1
Tracey

I did a lot of research and she loved her father greatly! She did NOT write the book. Her sister said she only wrote one book and hated the spotlight. When her sister died the disgusting money grubbing people came after her and they wrote the book. So NO she did not write the book!

1
Agnieszka

Which doesn’t change the fact that IT WORKS in the To Kill A Mockingbird universe… even without Atticus hero worshipping

0
Tracey

No it does not. Atticus was Harper’s father and he was not a racist!

1
Tori

I agree the second book was aweful

1
Cindy

@Tracey Not tryin to be argumentative, but I could have SWORN Harper Lee passed AFTER Watchman was published and on the shelves… I seem to recall putting it on my read list, and some months after, she died and EVERYONE went bat crazy trying to find and read Watchman. Mind if I have a look at your source?

0
Tracey

@Cindy Yes Harper Lee did pass away prior to the book being released. Harper’s sister, the one that protected her, died 2 years prior. The doctors and nurses said that there was no other paperwork and that Harper at the end was confused. The book issue began the moment her sister passed away.

1
Cindy

Okay… But what’s your source material? I may just be having a blonde day, but I’m still having trouble comprehending. Like… Do you have a link to where your information is coming from?

0
Tracey

@Cindy Hi. Do your own research. I do not have the links anymore. I wrote the info down in my journal.

1
Cindy

Believe I understand. Thank you for your time.

0
Julie

actually, it was written by her, she wrote it first before she wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. Her publisher said she should write a more easy book, that people could get through. So, she did and that was ‘To Kill A Mockingbird.’ Her sister was a lawyer and protecting her until she died and Harper Lee was in a rest home and she didn’t remember anything and the publishers wanted her to publish it, so she did, I read it.

Agnieszka

It is lovely… and the move adaptation is equally as good as the book, which is rare
