I work for a library in Minnesota and this sounds like a great question for your local librarian. Especially if you are looking for specific information about the battles your family participated in.
Gone with the wind. Throw out the movie, Scarlett ran a lumber yard!, A land remembered, men taken to fight, historical Florida, Ladies of the Club, post war
The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, I think is the title. But I can’t remember who it was by. They made a movie of it with Donald Sutherland (Kiefer’s dad) and it wasn’t too bad. The book, as always, was better.
My husband reads everything he can get his hands on about the Civil War. He highly recommends the trilogy by Shelby Foote. If you are just interested in reading about the confederate , maybe individual books about Robert E Lee and Longstreet , Stonewall Jackson, Early and Ewell (?) . The best battle books he read were about Gettysburg, then Antetum and then Shiloh. He mentioned other authors, James McPherson, Stephen Sears and Bruce Catton. If you prefer fiction Jeff Sahara had a great civil war series, plus some nonfiction books about battles I think.
Howard Bahr has written some great civil war novels. I recently read The Year of Jubilo, set in the south in the war’s aftermath, and his writing blew me away. After completing this one I bought his earlier book, Black Flower but haven’t read it yet.
For sure Cold Mountain, as mentioned. The audio version of Shelby Foote reading his book Shiloh is really good. Also Bust Hell Wide Open, which is the story of Nathan Bedford Forrest. He was the only general who rose through the ranks from private to general. Grant, Sherman, Lee and Jefferson Davis all gave him his due as a military genius by the time the war ended. And he did free his slaves although most chose to work for him after the war.
What are you interested in? Non fiction? Fiction? Military focus?
I had family in the military during the civil war. I’m looking for information on different battles. Thanks for your response!

I read Killer Angels in High school and it still formost in my mind today. I forget the author tho, but well known so not hard to find I am sure.
I loved this book…Michael Shaara was the author.
I too loved this book. It’s part of a trilogy. I just got them for my 15 yo grandson.
@Linda I did not realize it was a trilogy. I’ll have to look for the other two.

“Traveller” by Richard Adams tells the story of the Civil War through the voice of Robert E. Lee’s horse.
That one sounds like the one to beat!

Cold Mountain will always be one of my very favorite books.

Killer Angels tells the Battle of Gettysburg.
Confederates in the Attic is great. Another absolutely fabulous non-fiction is Race and Reunion.
