That’s a sequel. The first book is “John Dies at the End”. There’s also a movie, but the book was better. 🙂
The Changeling by Victor LaValle was really creepy. Not like AH! Jump out at you scary, but seriously creepy.
I dont know about scary but suspenseful I would recommend F. Paul Wilson’s Repairman Jack series. Which is kind of like The Equalizer in a magic setting.
