Any suggestions for a cute and original newborn book for present?

My best friend has had a baby, a little girl. I’ve decided each year for her birthday I’m going to buy her a new book. Any suggestions for a cute and original newborn book to start me off? ?? ?

Joking. But maybe for the parents if they have that kind of sense of humour. I always get my friends’ newborns Love You Forever by Robert Munsch and write a little inscription inside for them to read as they get older. I like it because I find my friends enjoy reading it during bonding time with their kids and can read it over the years even as they get older.

Bought it for ourselves ( grandparents) . Would not dare to buy for the parents … not sure about their sense of humour

Our tiniest babes have always loved the ones with rhythmical prose. Since newborn eyes are still developing, high contrast pictures would be the most effective – such as books by Eric Carle. One that would grow with the little one would be something like Ten Little Ladybugs – and as the baby gets older, she will love its bumps and sentence patterns. My oldest loved flipping the pages of that one. 🙂

Give her Machiavelli or Wilde. She might not be able to read it but when she grows up, she’ll always go back to reading the first book she ever got from the most dearest person. And it should carry messages she may never be too old or young to read, giving this gesture a meaning. ?

When she gets older, put What do You Say to a Kangaroo by Mercer Mayer (I think) on your list.

Great idea and i made a pact to do the same thing rather than add to landfill by buying superfluous toys!
The book in the link is by a Tas author and my nephew loved it!

Some favorites of my 3yo, over the years:
Ten Little Fingers, Ten Little Toes
Good Night Construction Site
Hug Time
Pout Pout Fish
The Going to Bed Book
Llama Llama Red Pajamas
Where is the Green Sheep

Another idea is to get each year’s Caldecott winner – my mom does this and it’s great.

Anything by Sandra Boynton; Dr. Seuss; Nancy Tillman in board book format for baby. As she gets a bit older, my favorite picture book is Animalia by Graeme Base.

It seems to be becoming a thing that at baby showers, instead of including cards with the gift, the guests include a baby book to start off the child’s library. (Thought I’d share this.)

Another vote for Goodnight Moon in board book form.
Pick simple, short books for the next few years, and get them in board book form. Babies read with their mouths. ?

Selena, recently there was a novel, A House Among the Trees by Julia Glass, that’s loosely based on the life of Maurice Sendak. You might enjoy that.

I always give the books about Carl the Rottweiler by Alexandra Day. They’re beautifully illustrated, they tell fun stories of gentle mischief and have practically no words – so they enable children to read before they are actually able to recognize words.

For many years, when my granddaughters were small, I bought a book wirh an associated doll or toy…. memorable one was a Madeleine doll and a book about Monet and Giverney. Also one I bought at a museum… was an undressed doll and instructions to create her clothes.
