Search “best YA mysteries” and “thrillers” and “detective” Lots of recs.
I keep repeating this: Agatha Christie is very reader friendly (and her writing is impeccable).

Kwame Alexander writes especially for picky/reluctant boy readers. His books are outstanding and young teens love him. Crossover won every award tween novel can win including the Newbery: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18222724-the-crossover

In the 11 years since this came out I have never had a middle school age boy in my classes who did not love this story (and its sequel). Many chose it as their all time favorite: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/318404.Drums_Girls_Dangerous_Pie

Let him find his own way. He’s still in school and is dealing with a lot of stress for a kid, just let him be. He will likely go through a reading funk now and again, but sooner or later he’ll realize that while reading may be tiresome in someways, it’s invigorating and relieving in so many others.

Lead the horse, don’t waterboard it.

How did you go from mystery recommendations for teen boys to water boarding? Yikes!

The Guys Read series are wonderful as well: short stories from great authors on a theme. My son and I loved Other Worlds and Funny Business

Try Minecraft: The Island. Haven’t read it, myself, but it’s been on the top seller list for 18 weeks now. Written by the author of World War Z. It’s gotten good reviews. It’s a novel, (the first official Minecraft novel) not a Minecraft gaming guide. Lure him in with the game, snag him with the adventure story of the novel ?

Seriously, even as a kid, going back to reread it makes it something different. I sincerely hope Ms. Rowling can understand the effect she’s had on individuals, let alone the world as a whole.

Not a mystery in the traditional sense, but Ready Player One might catch his attention since it’s based mostly in a virtual world, and the main character is a teenage boy. It’s so good!

Take away the video games. They take away the will to exercise engage with others etc. I see my 19 yr old grandson who is overweight and no job sitting in front of the tv playing games.
